I'm looking to get back in to having a decent music system after children took over for several years and I defaulted to having a Sonos AMP in the living room. It serve its purpose, but if I crank the volume up with no audio from the source(s) then there is a lot of noise and I do notice I'm missing something versus what I had previously.
The Topping LA90D looks like it might fit the bill, but I just need help with figuring out the rest of the components.
My last 'good' setup was:
RPi running MPD, Toslink -> Chord Mojo -> Cambridge Audio CXA 80 -> Tannoy XT8F (8ohn, 91db)
I've also had the following:
RPi running MPD, Toslink -> Chord Mojo -> TEAC CR-H101-DAB -> Q Acoustics Concept 20 with official stands (6 ohm, 88db)
I still have all of that kit, some set up in my office and some in boxes. I also have some Master & Dynamics HD40 that I use and like.
Personally I think the TEAC+Q Acoustics combination sounded the best. In fact, skipping on the Chord Mojo in that setup was also really good so the TEAC must have a great DAC in it.
I've ordered the Wiim mini to give that a spin with the toslink out into the TEAC with Concept 20 speakers, so I can once again put my large FLAC /hi-res collection to good use.
I'm currently thinking of the following set-up:
Wiim mini (maybe pro or ultra later), Toslink -> Topping D50 III, balanced -> Topping LA90D (power amp/no volume control mode) -> Try both sets of speakers
So in this way the volume control duties lie with the Topping D50 III. Rather frustratingly it seems to only have a bluetooth remote control, which is going to be a total pain as everything else runs off a trusty Harmony remote.
Is there anything I'm missing with the proposed set-up? Maybe the amp selection is wrong or I should use a different DAC? The price and performance of the D50 seem ideal, it's just the remote being bluetooth is a problem and I can't seem to find a suitable high performing DAC with balanced out that has an IR remote without increasing the budget significantly.
My thought process behind choosing the LA90D is that the figures and reviews are very promising and if I really want more power I could get a second one.
