Hello from France,

I have just created an account in this forum even if I was reading the posts since several months, there was so much to read, not yet anything to post !

Neumann has just released during the NAMM 2019 a new subwoofer...the KH 750 DSP.

Neumann KH 750 DSP Brochure

https://en-de.neumann.com/kh-750-dsp#description

The KH 750 DSP has a unique and flexible 2.0/0.1 Bass Manager allowing the subwoofer to be used in many different system configurations. On the back panel there are analog and digital inputs and outputs, four routing modes and adaptable acoustical controls to allow for seamless system integration. The Neumann.Control App for iPad® gives access to many additional functions inside the subwoofer.

The newly designed 10” long-throw driver has a large magnet, linear motor design and a very stiff pressed steel basket. As subwoofers are usually placed on the floor, a robust grille protects the driver from accidental damage.

The well-braced cabinet is a sealed design which brings the fastest possible transient response. The two analog XLR inputs are balanced as are the two analog XLR outputs. The 192 kHz / 24-bit digital input can accept AES3 and S/P-DIF signals.

The KH 750 DSP can be used in music, broadcast, and post production studios for tracking, mixing, and mastering.

Thanks to the significantly reduced housing depth, the KH 750 DSP is 'compatible' with the often confined space available in home recording and broadcast studios."

Features:
- Easily installed compact cabinet with a very deep bass response
- DSP engine optimizes output to achieve reference class sound
- Neumann.Control App for iPad® to set up, align and operate in a system

Hello again,

It looks like that with the Neumann App, we can have access to acoustic controls on the subwoofer, but also on both speakers attached via XLR.
So it brings the DSP to the monitors attached to this subwoofer, like KH 120 A, KH 310 A and KH 420 A with Neumann Control IOS App V3.0

Are these worth using with passive speakers (i.e. not Neumann monitors)?

At $1650 each, there are many options.

IMHO, no. Active monitor manufacturers' subs tend to be overpriced because bass management for active monitors has historically been difficult. Pre-pros with XLR outs aren't exactly easy to find or cheap. A sub with a built-in high-pass filter connected upstream of the monitors (preamp-sub-monitors) is the solution, but this I/O configuration is rare, which means Genelec or Neumann can afford to charge elevated prices. Genelec or Neumann's subs aren't exactly the best value when we consider the likes of Rythmik, Hsu, JTR or Power Sound Audio which require a pre-pro to integrate effectively (ie. a high-pass on the monitors to limit excursion), and have historically served different markets and I/O requirements.

Products like the Okto DAC8 have the potential to change that by allowing the crossover work and volume control to be done cost-effectively in DSP before sending analog-out to multiple subs - which means that active monitor owners are no longer relegated to paying excessively for subs for their I/O configuration rather than distortion and SPL capability. Market-leading offerings by sub specialists are now realistic options, while still allowing effective bass management.

I've got a KH80 and KH805 setup which is superb. The linear phase crossover on the KH80 is a real benefit.

I like the look of this because of the compact size, and I'm using in a small room at low volume levels.

I've a preference for sealed subs, even though it shouldn't matter if the ported sub is properly implemented.

It is expensive!

Hello from France,

I have received the KH 750 DSP and the new Neumann Control App allow control of analog monitors (KH120, KH310 and KH420).
My KH310 are now DSP via the KH750 DSP...

Sincerely yours

Habu

Interesting, looks like I'll have to give it a try again. I never got it working with my KH80 before and I suspect it's down to having older KH80s.

How is the KH750?

Hello from France,
You can upgrade the firmware of your KH80
« Firmware update
Firmware updates are done via the Neumann .Contol software . When it is opened it surveys the network for loudspeakers and checks if the firmware is up to date . If a firmware update is needed, you will be prompted to follow the on-screen instructions . It takes approximately 10 seconds per loudspeaker to do the update . »

Regarding the KH 750 DSP, for me it is the perfect subwoofer, same sealed design than KH310, just extending lower frequencies.

Before this Subwoofer, I have tried Dynaudio BM9S II, but It was defective on arrival (one channel inoperative), so no more Dynaudio for me and I discovered Neumann...

Sincerely yours

Habu

In case anyone comes to this thread and sees my comments about not being able to set up the KH80 with Neumann.Control, the latest version of the app has allowed me to set up the KH80 with no issues. It's a fantastic speaker and I highly recommend it.

I am considering changing my KH 805 for a KH 750, as the KH 805 is a bit of an eyesore in the living room and has never really been fully accepted by SWMBO.

One thing concerns me based on Neumann's specs. The distortion of the KH 805 seems much lower than the KH 750.

Harmonic Distortion at 95 dB SPL in 1 m (Blue: THD, Green: 2nd harmonic, Red: 3rd harmonic)

KH 805

KH 750

How audible would this be?

Would a pair of KH 750 sharing the load make things better? Two KH 750 would be more domestically acceptable than one KH 805. There would be additional benefits from using two subwoofers, so not a bad solution anyway, albeit a more expensive one.

Can the KH80 be used as living-room speakers (in a 20 square meter room)?
With or without this sub?

I guess that it depends on the listening distance of your setting. Subs imo are essential.

DSP power for all analog Neumann monitors

https://en-de.sennheiser.com/mediaroom/dsp-power-for-all-analog-neumann-monitors-284808

Neumann has greatly enhanced the features of the KH 750 DSP subwoofer, which was launched in 2019, with the release of the latest version of the Neumann.Control iPad® app (version 3.0).

The “Guided Alignment” and “Manual Alignment” functions that allow for easy acoustic adjustment to the room now not only work with KH 80 DSP near-field monitors, but also in stereo setups with all other Neumann KH Line monitors (KH 120/310/420). Simply connect these monitors to the stereo outputs of the KH 750 DSP subwoofer and, in conjunction with the iPad® app, they can now also benefit from its DSP power. In this way, the KH 750 DSP can now serve as the intelligent control center of every Neumann stereo setup.

“Guided Alignment” is a patented wizard where you are asked simple questions about the room and the loudspeaker/subwoofer position and the app adjusts the response of each loudspeaker/subwoofer accordingly.

With “Manual Alignment” expert users have complete freedom to adjust an 8-band fully parametric equalizer, levels and the time-of-flight delay in each loudspeaker or subwoofer as they wish. “Manual Alignment” can also be used to edit Guided Alignments in a more detailed way.

Furthermore, this configuration offers the following advantages:

  • Individual X-Over optimization between the subwoofer and the connected Neumann monitors, depending on the monitor model used.
  • DSP-based phase linearization of the connected analog Neumann studio monitors for an even more transparent sound image.
  • Use of the digital inputs (S/P-DIF and AES3) of the subwoofer for the entire system.
  • Lip sync delay for the complete setup.

Yes, it can be used with analogs, I use it with 310As...

I like the app but have three complaints
1. There is no manual, so like most tablet apps you have to poke around at everything to figure it out
2. You use sliders to change the gain/Q values, I would like to be able to directly input the values. I spend too much time screwing with the slider to get the correct value...
3. No Linux version of the app
