Neumann KH150

When recently one of my KH150 speakers died and was sent for repair under warranty, I connected again my old Adam Audio A3X speakers plus sub and used them for three weeks and a half. Then I switched back to KH150 after repair (mainboard failure) and initially the Neumanns felt like dark sounding indeed, however after a relatively short re-adaptation period they started to sound perfectly normal again (with treble set +1 on the back) to my ears.
I will note that I find my KH150 sound best after 20 minutes of playtime.

Such comment rings the alarm bells to me as a sign of adaptation as the loudspeakers don't audibly change their response, so it could be you might like not them as much on default and need each time to adopt to them.

Why is the white more expensive?

Haas effect and all that jazz (reflected sounds and direct sounds within ~20ms {~20ft} of each other are "heard" as a single sound).

No and no. The Genelecs aren't tilted up on axis. They just tilt less off axis.

And beyond that, the 120 and 150 don't sound the same! The 150 is noticeably darker.
The 120 II's and 150's measure and sound the same. I have two pairs of each in my studio.

I would appreciate your source for this. I thought it was more like 10 ms. thanks

As said before in this thread with directivity issues you cannot correct both direct and reflected sound.
I'm gonna put some EQ on that band with my RME and report back. I'm curious and this is part of a learning curve.

No, they literally do not. I will keep repeating this. The 150s have a kink in the SP that the 120 IIs do not have anywhere near as severely (note how much narrower it is), and the average SP slope is quite a bit shallower (0.2dB/oct might not sound like a lot, but that's in effect a roughly 1dB high shelf from 500hz-16KHz). I've heard them both too, if you know what to listen for it isn't subtle.

Since KH 80 DSP is on special until tomorrow I take it, can someone comment on its sound signature. I need a small speaker to fit in a hole in the wall (in a different room) and this one would fit.
Turns out Genelec 8030C was 'just' too big for that location.
KH 80 DSP is $629 Canadian this weekend.

Make sure there is enough ventilation for cooling. Check the user manual.

I did some reading (KH 80 DSP review, the 8030c review and the KH150 review)...and I tried to EQ the Neumann tonight...getting in closer to 'direct sound' and then comparing further away with the sum of all reflective surfaces.

With the Genelec 8030c, I could correlate an improvement when EQ'ing (as per Amir's recommendations), near and far field.
With the Neumann, in far field, not so much. If anything it made the speakers sound too bright.

My room is not treated.

Second test: tonight I put some damping material here and there and that improved things. More work needed.

But the conclusions for me was the difference EQ'ing achieved, and not achieved, between the Genelecs and the Neumanns.

Good lesson learned!

I decided not to get the KH 80s. I don't think I'll need them in the end...and I'm going to work on repairing the opening in my wall and install some coloured mood lighting or something. The KH 150 are doing the room justice on their own!
