Neumann KH120 II

Yes - the price difference is pretty big. I agree. For certain purposes it is worth it. For others .......

Recently I set up a separate mixing/mastering station in my studio. I purchased a set of KH120's for it and they work fine, but ....... So yesterday I ordered a pair of KH150's from Sweetwater to use at that station. The KH150's are simply a significant step up from the 120's. It will be very interesting to see the comparisons of the 120 II's and KH150's.
How are the KH150 a significant step up?

DSP + more powerful amp + (slightly) larger cabinet x inflation = less happy wallet (but happier ears).

Well, one product has been on the market for a 12 years, the other is not even available yet. The KH120II will drop some in price, give it a few months.

Overview from Neumann:

The KH 120 was 650.-€ in Europe and the new version now seems to be 900.-€, quite a steep rise in price.
To be fair, you’re comparing the street price of a >10 year old monitor to the rrp of its newly announced successor with DSP. If you compare the respective recommended retail prices, there’s nothing out of the ordinary:

Rrp prices of the 120 series in Euros:

120 A : 729,-, i think the rrp at release was 719,-
120 D: 1195,-

new 120 II: 899,-
new 120 II AES 67: 1195,-

The 120 II will soon be available at 799,- or less soon enough I am sure, just like the 150 is already quite a bit cheaper than the rrp.

What's the benefit of heaving AES in speakers when used in small spaces (at home)? Is the price increase for the AES integration really justified?

I don't think so
They raised their prices dramatically
They used to be a bargain compared to Genelecs , but not anymore

“They raised their prices dramatically“

I am more one for facts, not hyperbolic statements. They raised the rrp from 719,- in 2011 to 899,- in 2023, for a new model with DSP.

The good thing is, you can always buy Genelec if you think you get more for the money there. I don‘t. :)

I don't agree. The KH 150 is advertised for 1449 a piece right now. For 2898 EUR it is a fantastic measuring active loudspeaker whith a profit margin for Neumann and the dealer. Not to forget 19 % VAT in Germany. And don't forget monetary devaluation...

So all in all I think it is not cheap by any means but it is fairly priced compared even to Genelecs.

By the way: my actual speakers and power amplifier (Amphion Argon 3s and Elac DPA-2) cost around 3800 EUR RRP and I am sure, the KH 150 (and perhaps the 120 II too) runs circles around my setup.

Here we go again, Vedder polluting every Neumann and Genelec thread he can.
He refuses to give up before you lot donate him some cash so he can finally purchase
some Genelec and put a focal tweeter in it.

Beryllium is the best (:

That in itself is the same nonsense as 8 inch drivers are always superior to 6,5 inch drivers and aluminum enclosures are better than wooden boxes.

And you know that ;o)
Breaking news, Genelec just presented the very limited (only one pair) 8050 BE edition with a 8" woofer and BE tweeter for only $599 so the studio monitor community can return to its normal business again:

The best speaker is always the one that exists in fantasy only. So i am waiting for the Neufolec Grande KH 9999z by german wunderkind engineer Harald Töpfer, his finnish counterpart Taavi Koppovelddinnen and french product manager Jean Houdin.
