I control my volume digitally with Sound Source, but I have my amps set to less than max volume to avoid accidents. One time I accidentally played them full volume but my amps were turned down a bit it wasn't a big deal. If I had hugely powerful amps turned all the way up (or if no volume control) it could have been bad. Set your amp to a reasonable level than use your DAC or device to control the volume.
