Hello, I have been a "heavy casual" listener for a long time and I would like to upgrade my listening experience.

I've been lurking audiophile forums for a couple of months now, seeing which products get mentioned and what type of feedback they get.
I was hoping I could get some useful pointers in the right direction when it comes to choosing the right type of DAC/Headphone for me.

----
DAC
I will connect the DAC to my laptop, and I will only listen to closed-back headphones(no speakers). I am not looking for the best "stats" on the spreadsheet. I am looking for a vast, ambient, visceral organic sound.
A sound akin to a single cell voyaging through the empty void of dark cosmos with the ability to grow and decay in an explosive exponential manner into various organic forms of sound.

While I do want to hear detail and clarity it doesn't take priority over musicality, I don't like neutral flat sound and I don't like overly analytical piercing sound. The adjectives that would best describe what I am looking for are "powerful, "dark", "vast" and "organic"... I think I am leaning towards Chord Hugo TT(1) DAC.

Headphone
I am looking for a closed-back headphone, I want the sound to be isolated in its own realm, away from the noise of the outside. I am not sure which closed-back headphones could give me the type of sound signature or characteristics that I am looking for. I want a wide sound stage(for a closed-back), organic analog-like sound, the ability to go from pitch black background into the rapid overwhelming growth of energy(not a rainstorm of needles) but rather a "vast ambient wave of energy".

Samples of music that I like

I hope you guys have some useful suggestions for me.

The first part is easy: Don't get the chord, waste of money in my opinion. If you want an all in one I would go for the excellent RME ADI-2 DAC FS
Then to be able to recommend you a headphone? Depends on the budget and what you are using today. What do you want from the new headphone compared to what you have today?
One of my "end goals" is the Sony MDR-Z1R, not neutral by a long shot but interesting. Way out of my budget.

Headphones - Audio Technica ATH-A550Z ($120)
Alternative Headphone - Audio Technica M40x ($79)
DAC/Amp - Schiit Hel ($189)

I would try different types of headphone - closed, open, IEM - before deciding on which one suits you best. Remember it is both what you hear and being comfortable using them.

The AUDIO-TECHNICA A550Z are on Drop for $80 right now. I have no experience with them and haven't seen measurements but that's a good price cut.
