I see some open box C658 for €1100, so €1400 with the Bass Control update. Am I right that this is the cheapest way to add DLBC to an existing 2.1 system?

Possibly. I believe NAD Electronics is the only manufacturer currently offering DLBC support for two-channel audio devices.

I've skimmed this thread and am still a bit confused about the low subwoofer output issue. It's suggested that this is a hardware issue yet I don't understand why it seems to affect some and not others. Does it interact with the subwoofer brand? If so, which brands/models should be avoided? Also has the introduction of DLBC "fix" this issue in some way? Would love it if someone can help me understand this as I am thinking of finally getting a subwoofer + DLBC but don't want to go down this path if I'm going to run into the dreaded low sub output problem. Thanks!

Yes if you are keeping a power amplifier worth the difference to the NAD M33.
