As some of you know, I do some audio consulting for a local auction house where my bought my Theil speakers. They specialize in estate sales and downsizing. While I add to their domain knowledge, am also gaining new experience too. My most recent auction was just such a case as it involved a mix of consumer and professional grade equipment. This particular consult initially occurred late last year and had encountered a musician who had become disabled and his family was liquidating his basement studio. There he had major CD and record collections, 3 turntables, many Sony CD players, 3 reel-to-reels, Hafler amplifiers and a cassette deck. The equipment had not been used in a couple of years and he was using some tri-amped custom JBL studio monitors while modifying a pair of Electro-Voice (EV) Sentry 3s with active crossovers. The EVs were in pieces and could only sell for parts so was hired to see if I could get them into usable condition to sell. Fortunately, the owner had only started to modify one and the EVs had extensive documentation including a crosssover schematic. After testing the drivers and finding he had left passive crossovers mainly intact, decide to restore them to their original condition. The Sentry 3s were popular in the early 80s, but was pleased to find they had polar maps for them pasted on the backs...
The crossovers look like this…
and in case you had not seen before, the speaker looks like this (without the grille)…
The crossover is behind the horn and so is easily accessed. Having one in original condition, I tested to ensure the crossover was working. I found it was and after removing the owner’s mods on the other, was able to restore the wiring to the passive crossover. The owner had added 12 gauge wiring which looked pretty silly connected to the original 22 gauge wires! Not that the speaker could not have used some updated wiring but my time was limited and so reconnected the original wiring. The grilles are a mess of broken masonite and particle board but repairable so will be a project for the new owner…
They are hooked up to a CD player and on display in the warehouse. Had not seen Class AB pro amps previously and he had all Hafler Pro models. Unfortunately a number of them were not working. I suspect they just need servicing as he generally took good care of his equipment.
