My DACs won’t work with my TV

I recently bought a Hisense TV and would like to plumb it into my existing audio system instead of buying a soundbar and etc.

Unfortunately, when I plug the TV optical out into my Topping EX5, I don’t get any sound. But the DAC shows that it’s receiving a 48 pcm signal. With my Topping E30, it also shows an incoming 48 pcm signal, but I get a rapid clicking noise out of my speakers. Same goes for a $13 Amazon DAC that I bought for test purposes. Only rapid clicking. I borrowed a friend’s soundbar and it works perfectly. All with the same cable.

So is there something about TVs and DACS not working well together that I never knew about before? Is there a brand of DAC that is known to work with TVs? Or is it a crapshoot?

Did you double-check that the Hisense is set to LPCM Output?

If set to anything else, then regular DACs won't be able to play.
The DAC is showing a PCM input signal. Unfortunately, the TV's menu doesn't have output settings which is strange.

Like I mentioned, it works with a soundbar.

I'm scratching my head....

There will be a setting for the optical output options. Also, some newer panels will mute the SPDIF stream with the normal TV mute button.

Most soundbars can decode Dolby (and possibly other formats). Most stand alone DACs only work with PCM (LPCM) stereo.

I have a Hisense tv U8N and it does have a setting for the optical output. If not set to PCM input, the output doesn't work. The setting is found under Menu/Sound/Digitalaudiooutput Passthrough should be turned off Digital Audio format should be PCM. Hopefully you have a similar setting on your TV. Good luck!

My thoughts more run to why use a tv as an audio source at all....

According to the manual, I should have a Digital Audio Output settings submenu, but all I have in reality is what’s in the pic. Maybe it’s a generic manual? Here’s what I’ve got for my Advanced Audio Settings

I’m only looking to run sound for movies and Netflix, etc. from TV to my main 2.1 channel audio system and through my speakers without adding another layer of audio equipment (surround, soundbar, etc.)

Perhaps, because visual content usually comes with audio nowadays?

I prefer separate streamers other than the tv options generally. Seems you should have more setup options for output, tho
