My 100fold increase in sound quality upgrade and a question

Hello, I had a creative T6100 as my only sound system for 25 years, i replaced the volume control once about 10 years ago to squeeze a bit more out of it. had so many other things to get first so put off upgrading my sound system until now, i couldnt really afford to but i hurried it up mainly because the right speaker had a dodgy connection and kept cutting out, anyway, i wanted a pair of rokits for years, bannana speakers I used to call them, Im not a studio or a nightclub so i went for the smallest size rokit5g5's and an audient evo4 audio interface, amazed by the sound quality i forgot about the lower frequencies at first but soon realised i was missing a sub so quickly got my hands on 1 of krk's smallest subs the s8.4.

I was initially impressed but then started to notice that muddy bass overload where the mains are blasting out the same frequencies as the sub no matter what setting i had the subs crossover set to, i had the mains daisy chained through the sub at this point but i realised i could not control the main speakers solely using peace eq so decided to purchase a 4 output channel audio interface, the evo8.

That was a fortnight ago now and im only just at the stage where im happy with the setting, at first i still couldnt separate the sub and mains channels, nor apply a high pass on solely the mains with peace eq until i installed voicemeeter potatoe and routed everything through it,

this along with specific equaliser apo commands on peace eq has allowed me to select quadraphonic sound and split the sub and mains channels. After making a list longer than the display box of different settings i changed tactics and stopped applying low pass filters to the sub channels. I think i have it right now using peace eq to apply a 12db/octave high pass of 80hz on the mains but no changes on any other channels with peace eq, just using the subs physical hardware crossover switch and setting it to 80hz.

Its sounding crystal clear and powerful now... The question is - is this the right setting for my setup?

On paper it looks good but if you're really curious get a measurement mic to give you the real good/bad news.

oh yeah i see some, would you recommend using an inexpensive one or are they inaccurate?

If you would be lucky enough, even a fairly old and affordable "measurement microphone" could work very nicely/properly, but you definitely need to "validate" it by getting precise Fq response calibration data for it.

If you would be interested in such a case of BEHRINGER ECM8000, please visit post #831 on my project thread.

well it could be an exaggeration but if you heard my old system you would know what i mean
Hard to convey what "your system" sounds like to you let alone to anyone else.

ps perhaps some REW measurements....

thanks, thats another future project i look forward to, sometimes it seems im more into tweaking settings than enjoying using the hardware but if i know it can be better im on the case, i will check out that post

Does your interface have phantom power for mics? If so then the Behringer, Dayton or similar that comes with on axis and 90 degree calibration files will be more than adequate. Otherwise the Umik1 USB mic would work too.

I recently dialed in a small desktop setup with a sub and shared my results in this post.

You've already invested in a bunch of new gear + 4ch DAC so you're already 80% there. Take the time now to learn a lot and go down a fun rabbit hole or just enjoy your new set up for awhile and circle back to EQ when you have time or the desire to take it to the next level.

It does have phantom power yes, thanks for the good advice, i will do this pretty soon.
