I started having audio drop-out from the left piece of my Shure SE535 and wiggling the wire would bring the audio back. I Google it and find a good spread of hits where people discuss replacing the cables and so on. Turns out that the connection between cable and earpiece is freely rotating, but the "seal" or cap on the joint is also the negative connection (or positive, but I digress). Grot gets into the joint and insulates the cylindrical terminal. I cleaned it out, they work fine again.
Are all such rotating IEMs wired like this, where dirt ingress is inevitable? Do the classic 2.5mm jacks have this issue? I'm long conditioned to expect surprise drop-outs to be the result of cheap soldering or weak/stressed wires so I was totally blindsided by having scrape some dirt off.
