Moving house has made me re-think physical media

I gave a way my complete lp collection years ago which are for me obsolete an ripped my cd's an a few lp's (cd's are a piece of cake instead of ripping lp's). So when moving i'm pain free for sure no streaming media for me besides to check out music. Running now 3TB of audio data on a SSD pain free where ever i live house wide.
Make sure to back up that 3TB of data because SSDs can and will fail. We have had a few take a dump.

I still have my CDs & DVDs but everything is "backed up". I put 4TB solid state drives in my laptops and I have a portable 4TB USB hard drive, and another computer with a 4TB drive. Most of the "space" is for video. Perhaps unfortunately... I started ripping to MP3 and I haven't re-ripped to lossless and I haven't ripped any new CDs to lossless. I also have an antique iPod "docked" in my car with about 20,000 songs on it.

I don't have a streaming subscription for a few reasons. I hate subscriptions. I want ownership and control. And, I'm old and I already own most of the music I'll ever want. :D I do have a free Spotify account.

I prefer physical books. Mostly it's just a "preference" but if it's a reference book it's also easier to flip-through to find or re-find something. I miss printed catalogs for the same reason.

For NAS still traditionell hard disks may be the thing to choose. Having a system that allows for 'hot spares' (i.e. having at least one disk in the NAS to take over for any one failing) is recommend. Also, consider regular backups to another system or some cloud offering for crucial data.

The answer is in the moving, not what you are moving. I suggest quit moving, because a few extra boxes is not a big deal. Getting rid of collected media is. I've never met a person who didn't regret dumping what he/she could have kept for the sake of 1/2 a PU load of boxes. I'm sure someone will chime in that it was the best idea they ever had, BUT no one I personally know.

I understand being shuffled off to the old folks' home and physically not having the resources, space, or money. I also appreciate selling a collection for a decent price, but making a choice between spending an extra hour moving a complete collection in most cases vs streaming or archiving is an easy choice for me.

I also keep reading how people moved their collection to CDR, HD, or Servers and SELL or even give away the collection. Completely unethical and illegal, UNLESS you keep the originals. Why do you think they are called "RIPS"? Because they ARE ripped-off and ONE person has paid for the use rights, NOT TWO.

In that case, paying for a service is at least putting a few coins in the song's owner's pocket. Everything I have, songs or movies I have the original back to VHF, CD, DVD RtR, Records or Cassette. I have a few that were remastered from RtR or LP, and a few by different record companies, BUT I still keep the originals.

I use the Music Channel or a Server, if there is a gathering, but for a good concert or listening session, I fire up the record players, RtR, CD players, and even a good cassette player for a few of the old garage band recordings I have. Some things are truly one of a kind and exist only one way.

Regards

Can't stop thinking about the fact that copious boxes of books, records, CDs and DVDs could be replaced by a NAS, a couple endpoints and a Kobo.

Sorry. Just wanted to rant a little

You have my sympathy - you only realise you have too much shit when it comes to moving and attempting to pile it all into a van. I/we moved house/caravans/mobile homes 11+ times as a kid here in Scotland and 5 different primary schools/4 high schools.

Thankfully I’ve never had to move as an adult since I left my parents home 1/2mile away, lived in same 1bed bungalow since I was given it by the council 30+years ago yet I live with absolutely minimal stuff around me, prob a throwback to moving so much as a kid, everything I own could fit in a small family hatchback (apart from white goods/bed etc).

True

I am just really lazy tbh

Maybe Spotify is the life for me after all
I went through all of this six years ago, moving from a big house in Fresno California to a tiny one in Washington state. I made a unilateral decision to give up LPs altogether - 1600 LPs, three turntables and a few receivers as well. Not to mention 100 78s and the equipment to play them. Had numerous music playing devices throughout the house, needed to whittle that down to one main system and a clock radio in the kitchen. I transferred as many CDs to ALAC as I could, but rarely listen to those these days. Almost forgot, also have a FiiO DAP with those files on it.

In any case, I had to downsize and don't regret it. Now I hear a lot of music via Tidal, so I have more access than before and nowhere near as much clutter. My big audio problem is acquiring CDs because, small as they are they still take up space and need to be organized. But most of what I'm finding these days goes for $1 a pop, so how can I resist? Getting proper shelving for my CDs still in boxes is my next major audio project.

I’ll consider that unethical and illegal issue ………..

……….right that’s me considered it and decided it’s not an issue.

;)

Having a beloved collection of CDs and/or vinyl records and a library of books is not “hoarding.”

nope not generally, although I suppose if a person was living in a home with stacks of records piled floor to ceiling and one-foot wide pathways from room to room with several rooms including the bathroom in-accessible due to record piles it might be hoarding lol...

Nothing “beloved” or life-enhancing about that kind of collection!

Is it even legal to have ripped content on a drive without the disc in one’s possession?
I can go one further. I'm in the UK and it's illegal to rip music (and video) even if the disc is in your possession!

Downsized to a one bed condo 12 years ago. All CDs ripped to FLAC and stored on multiple drives. Installed Tidal. Dumped all the CDs.

Now the only ripped FLACs i listen to are on my iPhone for use outside with my B&W PX8s.

After 10 years Tidal does a very good job of offering me useful suggestions every day. I have no issues with the GUI.

gotta love those laws that exist, but would never be enforced

I did that for all my music which is now on a couple of NAS drives. Very happy with it.
Ripping them for convenience is a good thing but I would never replace physical media.
It does.............very well.

We’ve lived in our first house since we bought it in ‘97. No plans on moving.

So I haven’t had to face the prospect of moving physical media. I got rid of all my CDs. Wouldn’t mind getting rid of my Blu-ray movies. Keeping my records. It’s possible if I had to move them, I would feel some level of animosity towards my records… or maybe my wife would :)

On the other hand, I’ve owned quite a number of large speakers over the years and the last time I was dealing with moving big speakers it was my Thiel 3.7s. I first had to load them into my car to take them out to get refinished. And not long after that when I sold them, boxing them up and moving them was an absolute b*tch.

And each time I had to lug those things around I said out loud “ OK this is really it, no more fucking big speakers!”

My demure 36” tall, narrow Joseph speakers were a pleasure in comparison.
