I just moved my old "home theater" from a small den to a larger open multi-purpose basement room. Current system includes: a 55" LG OLED TV, Sony STR-DN1080 AVR, Monitor Audio Silver left, right, and center speakers, an REL T2 sub, and Polk Audio RT25is on stands as surrounds. For listening to pure music, I now almost exclusively use my nice headphones (HD800S and HiFiMan Arya Organics) with a headphone amp in the den, so the basement system will be almost 100% for streaming movies and shows.

I would like surrounds with a smaller form factor than the Polks. May still mount on stands or maybe bookshelf mounted on a console behind the couch, as one member suggested. Thinking Minx Min 12/22 or some MA Mass surrounds if I can find them. Hard no on wall mount. Will work on reducing reflective surfaces, but likely no special panels on the walls being reserved for artwork. Are canvas paintings better than glass covered art? Will add window treatments on TV wall. Prefer mounting 2 layers within window casings: shear curtains to let in light + blackout roller shades for HT time. Will consider bigger curtains across back wall, but tricky with short ceilings height.

Future upgrades considered are: 0) Mounting TV on wall with new console to house AV equipment below, 1) adding an AVR that can support up to 5.2.4. Current one might be able to boost system to 5.1.2. 2) Considering mounting small Atmos speakers at wall/ceiling junction above front L & R speakers, maybe Minx. 3) Avoid wires in walls by adding up firing Atmos speakers directly on top of base L & R - will these work near as well? 4) Go full .4 on the ceiling. Note this is a basement with short ceilings just over 7'. 5) add a sub. I know room treatment and set up might make the most difference, but this room also has to function outside the paradigm of a HT. Suggestions?
