It's a cooperation between german designer Joachim Gerhard (Audio Physic, Sonics, Suesskind) carpenter Markus Grelka and others under the "Pure Acourate Sound" umbrella and the speaker is called "Cerubin 2".

I’d take away the alien face hugger on the speakers for aesthetics, but there’s some beautiful materials in there. The finish on the first picture is crazy.

Of course, you can remove it, but it’s part of the acoustic design—though measurements would certainly be more revealing than mere claims.

I think this is a more elegant solution, and it makes acoustic sense that it would result in a slightly wider dispersion pattern. However, whether it also remains uniform would require measurement.
