Still, nothing beats the two paper cups and string tech of the 1980s. Some Say Robert Hooke in 1667 did it better, but my childhood says different.

If that's the best they can do with veneer I think I'd prefer paint.
My guess is (hope) is that the veneers line up when the mid/treble panel is in the other orientation and the top picture is them rotating it for the other orientation.
It does rather mean that in a design with horizontal/vertical orientation adjustment veneer is a poor choice of finish.

I initially thought that, but it doesn't look like it would match in any orientation to me. It's not just that though - surface finish looks poor too, like it needs another few rounds of finishing.

This is a rare Onkyo speaker from 1972, the U8000. I know this speaker because a friend who lived for years in Osaka (Japan) brough his set (locally bought second hand) to Belgium when he moved back. Never heared about it before and hardly any pictures or info can be found online. It seems to be a "Japan only" product from the brand, that was only short in production. But it's the direct ancestor of the more known and rated Scepter series that brand. But these sound great for that time and his set is in perfect state. He did not want me to photograph it, so i took one of the few pictures i could find from it from the internet.

Ok, I think what makes these “beautiful” is more so where these speakers came from. I think we’ve all been there (Stateside) at least once in our lives when we needed components and knick knacks:

@Pearljam5000:
A bit of a mess. :p Bonus points for aesthetics with similar sizes. The separate boxes for the tweeter and midrange ruin the overall look. If the tweeter and midrange were in one box, it would certainly look much better. :cool:

I believe that it is painted with a stipple roller and what looks to be semi-gloss latex paint. The bad part, it's very difficult to keep clean. It may have some acoustical value, even if the color does make your stomach a little uneasy.

That is one of the speakers you have to love the sound of because only a mother could love that one. Yikes
