Indeed…add to that, the desire to lean on a loudspeaker when talking.
My speakers have a very high-end finish and I would never place anything on them, but the high quality finish is not enough to flag to non-audiophiles “ please don’t place your drinking glass, or anything else on top.”
The very day I got my speakers and had marvelled at the beauty of their finish, a cable guy showed up to install something in the same room. I’d only left for a couple minutes to come back and find that he placed his goddamn tools - pliers , screwdrivers, etc. - on top of my speakers!
Non-audiophile guests also constantly seem to want to put a hand on my speakers or lean on them while they’re talking to me. My eyes immediately dart to whether they are wearing a ring or a bracelet or anything that could scratch the finish and seriously reduce its resale value.
It’s always a bracing reminder that outside of my audiophile bubble, most people are simply not accustomed to the idea of expensive audio equipment.
