Dang, I want these!

A lucky (IMO) Steve Hoffman Forum member just received a pair of Devore O/Bronze speakers which are the upgraded version of the O/96.

I find the look and finish and materials of this speaker incredibly attractive, pretty much bang on for a speaker I would consider endgame (for me).

Lace American Walnut front finish, bronze accents work great:

These are "just" plain boxes with nice high gloss paint, but the wood baffles make it so much better. Really nice.

Somehow I like that format in general. Speakers wider than deep. Just speaks to my aesthetic sense. Like these Heco Direkt models:

Lovely.

Lovely.

Totally. I’ve always found those Heco speakers to catch my eye. They somehow just sort of nailed the form factor for that type of speaker.

I admit that I’m a sucker for a high gloss finish on wood though (which I know is not to everybody’s taste).

They look nice
But what's so special about them tech wise?
They look like a normal 2-Way

Since you asked …:-)

There’s nothing special about them in terms of any new technology, of course. The only thing particularly special about them is that when they came out, it was before the “ old school speaker” craze that seems to have got a foot hold, and so it was one of the first wide baffle old school designs introduced by a well-known high-end company.

It was just something Devore wanted to do because he loved the look and sound of somewhat similar older loudspeakers, and also he was looking to increase the sensitivity and easy impedance so producing a speaker that could be used with lower powered tube amplifiers, even single ended. But he was also trying to produce a speaker that had less of the problems and liabilities that plagued lots of the high sensitivity speakers of the time - like lowthers, horns etc - but also some of the older big box designs tended to sound somewhat boxy and less airy, spacious and more muffled than newer high end speakers.

I think Art Dudley nailed it when describing the speakers as bringing the sense of density and body and richness some audiophiles associated with old speakers, yet combining that with a more modern performance in terms of spacious soundstaging and imaging, and being rich or sounding and wider band with than for instance lowther designs.
As Art Dudley put it, some will see this combination as the speakers singular strength, and that’s how I saw them as well.
They didn’t sound like any other speaker I demoed, and they were one of my favourite speakers I’ve ever heard.

It’s always easy to backseat quarterback and say “meh, just a two-way in a squat box” but practically nobody was doing that at the time, and in fact Devore’s dealers who were used to his more conventional skinny towers, said they were going to have trouble selling any of the new design. But as soon as people saw them and heard them they took off, became by far Devore’s most popular speaker, they’ve been backordered ever since 2011, and they are also one of the most sought after loudspeakers in the used marketplace, retaining their resale value very well.

The Devore Bronze is an upgraded version (new tweeter, new wave guide, upgrades to the woofer, some other upgrades)… and I’ve enjoyed reading new owner comparisons to the original O/96 they just replaced.

I’m pretty sure they would be for my taste one of my endgame speakers.

Yes, I get that. In a way I think of it as: certain two-ways are a nice place to visit, but three ways feel more like home.
:)

I have three two-way stand mounts that I own, and one 3-way tower and 2.5-way tower. All have their own appeal. Of them all, the three way sounds the most confident and robust.

Very nice, the picture I posted was my three way from 2003. I’ve owned 4 different ones and enjoyed them all. Back in 1973 I bought a Wharfdale Full Range, which I converted into a three way with adding a midrange driver and dome tweeter. Built a three way 12octive / decibels crossover by reading a library book. it sounded amazing, but then again it was the seventies and my mind usually expanded by certain substances.

Might as well be one of these as it comes in at 30khz.
I'm really confused, why even go to the effort of making it look like there's a tweeter in it. I mean it costs extra and is a faff just to do. Why bother! It's a cheap speaker.

It's safe to assume the business calculation is sound. The fake tweeter makes it look like a "proper speaker", and if that helps sales more than it costs, which seems likely, then there you have it.
