Approximation of how they may look sanded down... Probably too lazy. We'll see ;).

I actually like the pure functional finish and form of these JBL 4722 cinema speakers. They got more and more pulled out for hifi also these days by more sensible audiophiles, and are actually not that extreme expensive. A friend bought a pair new for 5500€ from a JBL dealer. We go install them this weekend at his listening room with Powersoft amps and dsp. Picture is from internet (not the pair he bought, we still need to collect them).

I think these veneered Genelec 1039a or 1034a series are from the 1990/2000s. These veneered special orders have not been seen again for about 30 years.

It would be great if these latest digital/analog dsp/Glm room correction as if turbocharged 12x master series could also get special veneers and varnish layers. They are from another planet in terms of sound reproduction better than those older series.

I don't know if the veneer is as patterned as the test I made, but it's there. I'll be running them with miniDSP to cross for subs, and maybe Dirac.
What makes the 12xx series so much better, you think?

why?

These are ment to be freestanding behind the projection screen of a smaller movie theater. Not build into a wall i thought. And all people that i know that uses this (or other variations of this) for hifi keep them freestanding, not in wall.

There is a massive gain in the lower end if you mount them in a baffle wall.
And to say there where made to be free standing is a bit of a stretch.

But i will not argue over it :)

This guy already has 4 diy ripole type subs (like the known model, but with 18" woofers) that he wants to use with this system in his big loft. Therefor he uses powersoft amps for the 4722 also, so he can link them with the powersoft amps of the subs and combine the dsp's of all amps as one system. They guy has a background in sound rental and knows something about tuning dsp's, but he still asked me to help. He never did hifi dsp, only for very big line array rigs.

I think the ASciLAB 2-ways with grill in all black look really nice, understated, unpretentious, but elegant, no silly oddball shapes to make visitors say "Ah! You're a hifi nut!".
On the other hand the ones with the bright colored waveguides look.... eww, like something spotted at a rural garage sale.

Just personal opinion if course.

You are very, very behind your time if you don't know how many miles ahead Genelec's master series smart active monitors have integrated their system into these speakers through their GLM software and thus their room correction program. The glm correction tailors your room space for a more balanced presentation and makes even stereo/multichannel sound have a stronger presentation character, and the sound flow is in a completely different class than in the old series.

The sound simply becomes super solid and higher-quality and more pleasant to listen to than if you have always listened to only that 16 bit/44khz and then started listening to a 1 bit sacd/dsd very good quality source. That fineness in the rhythm brings out more dimensions much better with these 12xx series speakers. The rhythm and melody are also more inspiring.

I note that I am not a studio worker at all (and I never want to be), but only an advanced hifi enthusiast who has been playing with SAM digital GLM speakers for about fifteen years when my late father bought the first 8260A SAM models for fun in his living room sometime in the 2010s. I followed suit as a boy and bought those 8260a for myself a few years later, around 2013.

Now I own both them and the Master Series 1237A pair, as well as the old 7071A subwoofer and also the 8340A models. My friend, who lives 1 kilometer away, owns the 1238A models and the 7380a subwoofer, which I have also fine-tuned a lot myself in his own living room, also intended for hifi use.

Ok, thanks for sharing your insights :). I'm not behind in time, just money :D. I haven't heard any of them, yet. The closest (in price) 12-series I could buy would be the 1237, but at a much higher price than what I'm paying for the 1039a. I already have 1022a, 1022b, 1031a and a few small ones, like 8030c, so 1237a would not do it for me. My 1022b's are Hypex FA123 driven, btw. ;). 1238a would be way too expensive, sad to say.

But hopefully miniDSP/Dirac can make up some of the GLM advantage. Anyway, I'm pretty happy about their potential in a nice room, which is equally important :).
They'll probably stay black, the physical handling is just beyond me. They'll be on wheels so I can move them around...

It's hard to believe how something that has this feature can be considered beautiful, and when a piece of furniture has a few of such objects on it, it's difficult to see how it could be eye-catching at all. Women rarely seem to like them.

dagfinn.

it's good if you're happy now. of course, when the price goes up, it brings a whole new possibility and a higher level of sound reproduction.

Just be aware that the old series is wrestling in the light boxing series compared to these 12x series, which are already in the heavy series compared to them. and in my opinion, these 12xx series without concrete wall/wood frame wall support need a good subwoofer if you want a really fluffy cream to taste like a wedding cake for you and the whole listening group on top of that sweet taste. ecstasy is like a drug for everyone to enjoy.

Of course, you can do without it, but if you've had a taste of sweetness from subwoofers, it's hard to live without it. Genelec subwoofers blend so well with their main speakers.
