Do any of the panel type speakers perform well?

I've only heard panel speakers a few times at dealers, but I did enjoy the illusion, especially with drums and percussion, where something so "solid" can come form something so seemingly insubstantial.

With a pair of massive floor standing speakers with a baffle full of drivers, you kind of expect them to sound weighty and punchy, less so with a panel just an inch thick.

Man, you folks have GOT to be kidding about some of these monstrosities. ( And to point to Wilsons, which as far as my ears tell me, are not worth 1/100th the price. ) Is the goal to live in a room, or point to speakers and say "look at that"?

My painted MDF speakers don't stand out. Either as some abstract techno-art or as a sore thumb. Someday I'll make another pair out of some exotics wood. My sub is pretty much hidden as a Chinese chest and my electronics are hidden.

These were the nicest-looking I've owned to date (stacked layers of plywood, black piano gloss finish, paper cone with leather surrounds).
Expensive piece of junk though (was a regular visitor at the 6Loons website back then).

I personally like KEF Reference series. They look clean, simple and elegant. Of course, they're expensive but well engineered with good measurements.
