Are "non-conventional" speaker designs worthwhile, or just gimmicks?
I don't think there is a blanket answer. We have conventional speakers (happen to be KEF) in our main system in a multichannel setup. If I had a separate 2 channel system, I think I'd get the D&D 8c for the cardioid pattern, room correction, and plugins.
....picked up speaker designer Stig Carlsson and his disciples (John Larsen, Larsen speakers R.I.P). One of these disciples, Peter Steindl, I think makes nice looking egg-shaped speakers. A bit of a lifestyle look to them but as far as I know Peter Steindl has worked hard to get them to measure and sound good.
Enough about that. In this thread it's about appearance, the beautiful so this is what they look like:

haha it really look like that with no cover. Their website is the worst BTW, there's no way to even find the model name, no info at all
I don't think you'd want to have them in a home where a male resident drinks heavily.

Seen from an aesthetic perspective, which doesn't bring the same associations but has two tweeters pointing in different directions as Peter's egg has so why not a blue DIY speaker?
Beautiful? Well, I don't know but pretty cool. I get that feeling of lifestyle speakers again BUT I suspect that the round baffle shape, for the sound, has its advantages (to minimize baffle edge diffractions).
OHIO Speaker Design Competition 2024
Parts Express 2024 competition. I only found one video. It did not contain much information, but on the other hand, you can see many exciting speakers in that short video. :D Andrew Jones was one of the judges in the competition. If anyone participated in the competition or visited the event...

I like a good truncated pyramid. Always felt like a smart shape to use and keep costs somewhat under control.

I was going to say the white version of the MBLs in that photo, the tower subs in particular, reminded me too much of refrigerators or washing machines.
I’ll take the black version instead (if anyone’s offering it to me)

Reminds me of the old Empire Grenadier speakers.
DIY speaker competitions are something else. There's usually two or three well designed speakers with well executed aesthetics and the rest is all over the place. You have to listen to the same song clips over and over which is just nauseating and everything is judged by old dudes with age induced hearing loss. I thought I'd enjoy them but ultimately I very much did not.
Skipping the first three images, these designs have great potential as side tables for the modern living room.
