Moondrop Lab

Does their app still stink or have they improved it by now?

Still bad from what I'm reading. E.g:

Noted that the $20 Echo-B looks very much like the dongle version of the FreeDSP cable...
But it is balanced and they talk about a "new moondrop app" in the advertising with online tuning but i didn't really digged in.

Have you seen the size (depth ) of it ? Like having a building sticking out of your ear .
Yes, they are massive but at least measure very smooth

The FreeDSP has differential output, just like the Echo-B.
I’m pretty sure FreeDSP uses the Synaptics, ex-Conexant, CX31988 (or CX31998 as referenced sometimes: I think they are the same).
It is the balanced (differential) version of the very common CX31993. They both have some integrated ARM Cortex MCU, no separate USB bridge needed, but I think Moondrop PEQ implementation is largely proprietary.

The app still sucks… but IMO, it’s definitely better with Chu-II or CDSP—same app, different chip.
Which brings me to this: I don’t know how much of the app”bad” is due to Moondrop SW team, or simply constraints & limitations of the chip itself. After all, I have yet to see PEQ implemented on another CX31988 (or CX31993?) by anybody else.

Intrigued by the Echo B so I will buy one and see can I decode the usb protocol ( as I have with the FiiO PEQ devices )
I started sniffing USB com’s between sources and these ‘smart’ DACs (strange addiction, isn’t it? :p).

I believe you mentioned a Beta to integrate these devices (starting with FiiO) directly into your Cringraph/Squig database—directly programming the device PEQ with no need for an intermediate file or app.

Moondrop, FiiO, TTGK appear to go toward EQ cloud-sharing of—curated or not—EQ profile for various HP/IEMs.

I can “smell” the potential… but I’m not sure this is the “right” direction… Any insights?

In the meantime, I pretty much stopped sniffing USB! :) And I have resisted buying Echo-B.

Yes, I have see that in their apps and I can understand why they are doing that - it brings in a whole social sharing aspect - but you mostly have no idea other than the name of what a specific shared PEQ will do. Especially when applied to cables / dongles on their own. Though it might make more sense with a specific DSP enabled IEM e.g. Change the tonality of the Moondrop May to be similar to Moondrop Dusk with one click.

And yes I have a beta of some code to push and pull PEQ filters directly from attach USB devices - I decided to repackage it a little so it can be more like a plugin as there are many many variations of that original CrinGraph codebase on various website and maintained by lots of different people now. And given how often new Usb / PEQ devices are coming out I feel it will be easier for people who maintain their measurement database to maybe take a drop of this "code" every so often. I have contacted a few other manufacturers and some have shared some details of their protocols ( and some have promised they will soon) but given the number of Moondrop devices I am very interested in getting support working soon ( though I suspect I might have to just rely on usb-sniffing as they didn't respond to my email request ).

Lay off that USB sniffing yo :D
