MoFi SourcePoint 888 Review and Measurements by Erin

I only recently learned that Erin’s graphs aren’t always consistent

Thank you for pointing out Spinorama’s are

Though if Robert-Hifi hadn’t posted, I would not have known Monsieur Pierre is Mr Spinorama.

Spinorama has a very wide range of gear, including some very $$$ … is Pierre responsible for all the data at Spinorama?

It is a database of measurements, collected from a variety of sources. The source is listed for each speaker.

Pierre gets the spinorama data (Klippel measurements) primarily from Erin and Amir and generates the graphs, EQ settings etc.
Other data sources are Audioholics and the manufacturer, but those are lower in quality.

I know March tested the Sointuva AWG in a 3rd party Kippel NFS lab in the US for example, so high quality too.

Edit: AsciLab also has their own Klippel NFS.

And Ascend.

I wanna see how these compare to the Q950s in terms of measurements. since they are both 8 inch coaxial tower speakers with 8 inch bass drivers

If you are willing to wait, more likely will see the Q11 Meta measured and will see how comparable it is to the MoFi. Based on recent KEF measurements, the Q950 does not look to be as good as the MoFi, but is also less than half the price. If Erin's recent Q3 Meta measurements are an indication, the Q11 response will not be as flat as the MoFi either. Erin claims the (high Q) response issues are not audible, so even if the Q950 exhibits them too, may be worth the risk.

Given how new some of these speakers are, waiting is likely to bring more data and perhaps a better deal on them.

Has anyone else noticed that earlier versions of the walnut cabinet were marketed with the black grilles (as shown on Erin's review page), but current revisions only show the walnut cabinet with the white grilles? Maybe they're assuming anyone who wants the black and walnut look will just run them with the grille off, but I'd much prefer the walnut cabinet with the original black grilles.
My demo set that just arrived from audio advisor came with black grills. They look really clean with the black front. I'm tempted to see if they can ship the off-white ones to compare.

Waiting on a replacement pair due to a rattle in one of my low serial number pair at various low frequencies. Probably just a loose nut or something but found that after removing the screws on the connection plate it wouldn't come out. Mofi suggested trying to get in through the front by removing the lower woofer, but that one is stuck in too. Seems like everything must be glued in, which is really bad for repairability.

The speaker's performance is fantastic it just doesn't look very good to me. If I spend 5k I need to want to look at it while using it.

I'm attracted to speakers with driver color that compliments the cabinet, and not these all black faceplates so many companies use. Unfortunately I just can't see myself ever buying these - but that's just my opinion.

It wouldn't make any sense to glue everything in. Maybe if it was a sealed design to keep it airtight.
A rubber gasket would be sufficient in most cases, I think.

I can understand why people don't like their appearance or even find them ugly.
To be honest I find their appearance just "okay", definitely not a good looker.

But I don't know of any other speaker in this price range with the same performance that looks a whole lot better.
Would love to see more speakers with curved cabinets like KEF used to have 20 years ago (IQ90 or Reference 205/2).

For a little more you have those in any color.

Yeah I don't think they look great by any means. The black grills definitely help them blend into the background when looking directly at them when not in use. They sound good and that is really all that I care about, but I understand everyone has different expectations. My wife doesn't mind the look and seems to enjoy the walnut so that means they can stay. Compared to what I had been used to seeing for the past 10 years I think they are definitely an improvement.

And the sections with the woofers aren't sealed, there's that big hole in the back :)

I can understand why I might not be able to get the woofer out, there really isn't anything good to grab them with since they are flush mount. Just a very small gap around the edge, and even a jewelers screwdriver couldn't get in there. Even tried a tool I had for spreading C washers to try to get the prongs behind the frame of the woofer. Anyway, when they eventually make their way back to Mofi maybe they will let me know what they find.

Sounds stupid to some but I would never buy a speaker that has a mountain range on the edge of its drivers. I'm sorry but Purifi needs to find a better way to reduce diffraction and distortion than that

It matches wood fairly well imo

To my engineering mind, a brilliant problem solving solution has a beauty in itself. The classic form follows function logic.

But I can see less engineering enthusiasts looking at that surround and going meh. A form first mindset.

No right or wrong here, just different tastes.
