MoFi SourcePoint 888 Review and Measurements by Erin

Wow, those seem so impressive. I would love to see a comparison between these, the R7 Metas and the ELX towers.

As for the port discussion - AFAIK if a port isn't designed properly, it might output undesired resonances which often appear as harmonics of the port's tuning frequency. Those resonances would be far more audible in a front port, and depending on their frequency might cause directivity errors and combing effects. On the other hand, a rear port needs a bit of breathing room to work well - for example, Genelec recommends a minimum of 5 cm between their ports and the rear wall.

They do look really good here

The standmounts for sourcepoint 8 and 10 are also very low, hence some retailers offer other stands for it instead of the original ones. So it seems like for purpose, but for which? Are the american people sitting that low?

While the SP888 is not listed on Spinorama.org yet, I was curious how its EIR compares to my Sointuva AWG, and manually overlayed both from Erin's website.

Doesn’t really matter. PIR is so overrated. The differing horizontal polars indicate far more about their likely differences in character.

If one decides to buy these speakers for home theatre, what does he use for centre channel? There's no possibility to use a third tower as centre channel as it goes under TV.

Why not? Just raise the damn TV. Do multichannel right.

Yeah, just raise your TV by 100%. Not really a great idea for many setups.

If a 42” tall tower raises your TV by 100%, you’re doing it wrong.

IME the bottom of the TV 50”-60” off the ground makes sense for normal people.

Lots of strange things make sense for normal people. TV being 5' off the ground is one of them. I couldn't be less satisfied with the fact that the only reasonable place I could put a TV in my family room is above the fireplace with a 48" mantle height.

Not hijack the thread: the ergonomic and healthy place for any screen is that your head pointing slightly down. Saves strain on your neck.

That's why they make recliners!

When did buying a pair of towers mean you have to stick a third tower under your TV? The SP8 and 10 exist. Other good coaxial center channels exist. Am I taking crazy pills? Why are we even talking about this?
People typically shell out more for towers due to their enhanced output capacity. Typical surround content demands the most from the center channel, so having a center speaker with less output capacity than your left/right speakers doesn’t make much sense.

Luckily for everyone the Sourcepoint 10 is more sensitive and has the same power rating (200W). Win-win. Erin did recommend the SP 8 & 10 as complimentary centers for the 888.

Isn't that basically all center speakers? A lot of center speakers do not even go below say 60-80hz because typically this is mostly for dialogue

The vast majority of centers have less SPL capability than the matching towers. The drivers are often smaller, and the cabinets are always smaller. When people talk about the demands on centers, they don’t mean output capability. They mean that even action movies are mostly people just talking to each other, and so it’s important to get a high quality center channel, and by that they don’t mean a third tower speaker with array of 8” drivers to handle bass.

The center channel is full range and I find a lot of deep bass content there. And I've tried setting the center speaker to SMALL but have never been able to replicate the bass I get with my dedicated sub added to the center speaker.

If there is a lot of deep content then the floorstanders and / or sub should be fine with taking care of it. The deeper bass is not possible to hear where it comes from anyway so..

All of this plus DSP from your AVR or other source.

I should have added that it's not just the deep bass effects that I look for in my center channel; it's also the ability to render the baritone range of male voice, such as with Russel Crowe. Try as I could with settings on both the AVR and the main sub, I was never able to get that vocal quality. Now, if I was able to get one of you experts to come to my house and show me how, I'd be all ears!:)
