MoFi SourcePoint 888 Review and Measurements by Erin

Updated 1st post with complete data on his website.

Has anyone else noticed that earlier versions of the walnut cabinet were marketed with the black grilles (as shown on Erin's review page), but current revisions only show the walnut cabinet with the white grilles? Maybe they're assuming anyone who wants the black and walnut look will just run them with the grille off, but I'd much prefer the walnut cabinet with the original black grilles.

I prefer the Revel F228Be. Better dispersion, less distortion and they look considerably nicer to me. On sale the Revel 228Be was within $1000 of the 888. Once I installed the F228Be I was surprised how little audible difference there was between them and my F328Be speakers. The front port on the F228Be really reinforces the bass in a medium room compared to the dual rear ports on the F328Be. They are both awesome speakers but after comparing both in the same house the only reason I can see going with the F328Be is if your room is absolutely HUGE.

It is odd that they didn't match up the grill colors to match the SP8 & SP10 in walnut.

Impressive results. Looks could be better.
Agree... a shame they didn't go for the tapered/curved type cab.

They also come in black and white as well as walnut... I'd probably prefer the black ones, if ignoring the boxy look.

iirc the sale price on the F228Be was around $7000 a pair or more (and list is 11k, btw). That is not apples to apples with the 888, especially since, as we have seen with the SP10 and SP8, the Mofi's are also reasonably likely to go on sale. Granted 7k isn't hugely far away from 5k, but to be strictly fair, Revel does make a speaker that sometimes sells for 5k - the F226Be - but it also has a list price higher than the 888. While the tweeter on the Revel is probably more satisfying than the 888, as a total package I'm pretty sure a fair number of people would prefer the overall range of the 888 over the F226Be.

To each their own- I like the boxy look. I had the SP10's in my house and I can say they definitely have "presence". :)

I dig the look. For some reason just seeing the data makes them even more aesthetically pleasing to me.
I like the thought of paper drivers..reminds me of the 70's when I was a kid and all those huge paper woofer speakers my parents had.

After watching Erin & then Ron's review of these they sure seem like pretty great speakers. I'd like to have a listen.

Actually, the F228Be was offered on sale for $3475 shipped with no negotiation.

However, I was able to purchase a new walnut pair for $6,000 with negotiation. The pear shaped enclosure of the Revel F228Be is much more appealing than the boxy 888. Plus, the white 8" Deep Ceramic Composite (DCC) Aluminum drivers are beautiful when the screens are off and sound absolutely fantastic. Not to mention the superior 1" Beryllium tweeter. The $1000 difference was well worth it to me. You certainly don't have to settle for the boxy design of the 888.

What's distinguishes it from the competition though it's that 8" midbass/midrange from 130Hz and up who I suspect can do actual midbass (the one that kicks combined with the lower woofers) and who also leaves all this voices area up to tweeter free of big excursion.

I suspect I would take this over the competition around the price.

I like the design of the 888: vintage classic boxy design. But then I also like modern curved designs.
Source point 888 vs March Audio Ukkonen
Or Wharfedale Elysian

You do get 2x 8 woofers in a rather large cab though
While I was writing this thread I was thinking about the Ukkonen and how it would measure once finished (AFAIK it is still being tweaked).

While the SP888 is not listed on Spinorama.org yet, I was curious how its EIR compares to my Sointuva AWG, and manually overlayed both from Erin's website.

The SP888 has a little more bass extension, especially below 35 Hz, but not much. While the Sointuva AWG is more linear, with a slightly warmer response.

EIR - SP888 x Sointua AWG.jpg

Edit: the largest difference is in horizontal radiation IMO. Above 4 kHz the SP888 is consistently wider, the Sointuva AWG gradually narrower. This implies in more treble into the room, with wider soundstage and more room acoustics interference; versus less sound into the room, smaller soundstage width but less room dependency.

I like both of these designs, I sit relatively close my speakers (5-6ft) and move around a lot side to side and up and down (I have young children). Wish the 888's vertical dispersion with the F228BE's front ports where an option :).

The vertical dispersion on the F228Be is fantastic. You can get up and walk all round the room and the wide dispersion lets it sound great everywhere. That front port on the F228Be offers significant punch. I was really surprised how well they compare to my F328Be with three 8" drivers. Very nice speaker design.

Thanks I'll look further into it. Local shop here has the F228BE and another shop sells the 888. for now the Buchardt A10s give me full range at lower volumes :)

After seeing Erin's review and looking at my 40 year old AR98LS's I decided it was time for the upgrade. These seem like a reasonable upgrade, although the credit card company was dubious when I placed my order, they're not used to seeing that large of a charge from a cheapskate like me. Now it's just waiting for UPS freight...
