miniDSP Tide16 - Holy Grail with 16 Channel Atmos/DTS:X, high SINAD

I missed that bit when I looked at the spec sheet. Now this has me excited. The only thing I would want is to remove all that Dirac BS and let me load my own FIR filters.

I think miniDSP let you do that on some of their other products, don't they?

Wow they actually did it, they implemented Dolby Atmos, DTS:X that a lot of people lamented were missing on the flex series.

Also comes with the full Dirac lineup.

According to the product page, it says "Audiophile-grade analog circuitry and converters preserve stereo fidelity while the Tide16 simultaneously handles advanced home-theater processing, making it ideal for combined stereo and home-theater systems". I'm hoping that means they have analog volume control of some kind, this might be the device for me lol

It looks like they use a web interface that runs on a portable device like a tablet.

You’re jumping ahead on tablet, or else we need to add that to the long “new territory for miniDSP” column.

They’ve always insisted on desktop hardware in the past, so a laptop at best. They have mobile apps but they’re extremely limited in control and receive no updates. Neither are particularly nice to look at or user friendly. I can’t imagine trying to run a full AVP setup on their usual UI.

Analog Audio Input Specifications, Zin: 200 Ω? Seems low unless I'm reading it wrong. Also listed is Zout: 200 Ω which makes more sense.

Those uses are not a problem. I agree that an ATV 4K or similar device being necessary feels silly, but if it makes the device half the price, I don't think it's a bad design choice at all.
How would say say a 4k UHD Blu-ray player be connected up in combination with an Apple TV 4k and and Flex HT? The Apple device only has one HDMI port as far as I can see so I'm struggling...

I don't agree on your second point but understand your perspective.

All of the devices we’re talking about support EARC, so you just connect the input devices into your TV. The HDMI port on the Flex HT and HTx is intended to be connected to a TV. Since it does not support Dolby/DTS, you need a blu-ray player that can decode to surround PCM (not uncommon I believe) or a TV that can (not as common these days).

Personally, I use the HTx with a Sony A95L (TV) connected to an ATV (for streaming; works well with Plex/Infuse also) and an Ugoos AMB6+ (for Kodi/Plex, blu-ray rips). MiniDSP’s devices are for tinkerers, not really an out-of-the-box solution.

This looks amazing. Gutted I bought a Denon arv 4800h towards the end of last year and full dirac range in black Friday sale. Still in its box though, main problem is it's too big to fit in my cabinet and don't have a good option to move it.

So this is very appealing for its size. Would pay a fair wack for a smaller box but I hate the giant arvs and it's undeniably transparent.

Interested to see how many teething issues there are.

Might get the Denon up for sale!

Why did they make the choice to not include a digital out? Would that not make sense for such a product ?
DRM implications from Dolby and DTS.

Great product on paper. Let's see how it works in practice. Probably most complicated box they ever released.

Also interesting choice to include full Dirac package all the way up to ART as standard. I wonder why? Would speculate they got a really good deal from Dirac for the full package, otherwise kind of goes against practice of other manufacturers. Storm excluded, but that is a different category price-wise.

I've got an SHD and a Flex, and this really does seem to be the logical end-point of MiniDSP evolution. Part of me would love to implement this in my system as I'm mulling over active/diy front mains with the SHD and was already moving towards using the Flex with MSO as a poor-mans ART. But at the likely $4k+ price point it's almost certainly too rich for my blood. Probably. Maybe.

If they are building products with Dante why not just use Dante output and make the amps with Dante as well or a digital out to increase channel count. Target Trinnov.
Trinnov is catering to a niche market. Partially overlaps with Storm at best, but then not really as Storm relies on Dirac that is quite simple all things considered.

Number of options and adjustments on Trinnov is mind boggling and no other company opted to go there as they produce consumer products. Trinnov is a custom instal unit - does not even have the common CEC. And they have best customer service support in the bizz - which for that money they should.
