miniDSP Tide16 - Holy Grail with 16 Channel Atmos/DTS:X, high SINAD

Who's buying first and sending to @amirm ?

Right gear allover, hideous looks though.
At 4500 euro street price in Europe you have stuff like M66 to compete for looks who literally wipes the floor with it in terms of looks.

If the targeted clients include the audiophile crowd, the first things to scrap is all the clutter of Doldy and BS in the front, these shout AVR not audio.
Complete deal breaker and it's a shame, it looks promising.

I guess HDMI licensing wouldn't allow digital outputs.
There are lots of AVRs and AVPs with digital outputs - from memory Anthem, Arcam, AudioControl, Emotiva, JBL, Lyngdorf, Storm & Trinnov.

Or you could pay $25000 euros/dollars for the real top of the range stuff.. ?

That still wont compete on this things alleged performance. Processors by Trinnov, Storm etc..

You cannot have everything (8 HDMI ports, pretty pretty looks, 98 + filters (thought that argument had been put to bed?) for 25% of the price whether in Euros, USD or £'s ?

Feel free to have a pop... but I think (IF it works properly) this will have more of an impact than anything else they have done?

I think this could have more impact than any other AVP, I think it's an almighty achievement, and still people criticise.

"If it works properly" is an appropriate qualification, but miniDSP always show their homework these days, and ASR etc generally back up their performance claims.

About stereo, I can imagine a hard core pair of a 4-way cardioid design which exploit the channel count.

Horsepower looks enough but other than (useless) THD+N I would much prefer a rock solid, RME-like filter implementation, an also rock-solid and safe level control (and I mean all gain and levels) and some measurements down low with some filters enabled.

Take these marks off, it's a shame!

It's a good thing they listen though.

Sure, but that's why I said "generally".

Does the inclusion of Atmos mean it will also have Dolby Surround (same for DTS Neural X) for upmixing?

Not really. This is a very niche product.

You have to be ok with just 3 HDMI in and XLR-only outputs.

Stereo digital outs are quite common. Digital outs for 16 channels -- not so much, unless I am missing something. The very high end has it; eg Storm I know does.

Can the NAD manage active crossovers?

Can the NAD manage active crossovers?
Like miniDSP does? I don't think so.
What's this has to do with premium feeling and looks though?

At this price point it matters, and it matters a lot.
This one looks like a nice '90's sat-box.

How much were tariffs on you htx? I’ve been considering one to expand my system for use with art…..
I paid $1398 for the HTx and UMK-1 with shipping with Deer Creek Audio (it was the same price direct through miniDSP at the time once you added tariffs in check-out). Currently it looks like direct through miniDSP it is $1310 with shipping and tariffs, so the tariffs came down a little bit possibly.

If you’re talking about Dirac ART, the HTx isn’t compatible. It’s compatible with normal Dirac; ART is a new feature of the Tide16.

These are the processors I'm aware of that have multi channel digital outputs:

So I don't want to get into this and maybe misunderstanding your post.. but they subsequently released new firmware which "fixed" this? The conclusion being.. by the thread starter..

"Overall some really nice improvements in performance and love that they reached out and fixed this issue unprompted.

Michael"

...and, frankly, it didn't desperately really need fixing anyway IMHO.

I will stop the bear baiting now ;):D

Need to decide on HTX or this one.... problem is I ain't got anything now - having just sold my Denon!

Regarding the HDMI spec...
Hdmi 2.0? Seriously?
Over at the AVS Forum, a beta tester reports that it has HDMI 2.1
Spec sheet linked above says HDMI 2.1.

Here is what the datasheet actually says:

3 x In, 1 x out HDMI switch, HDMI 1.4/2.0b compliant

Resolution: 4k60Hz UHD, 18Gb/s input/output capable, 24/25/30/50/60fps

4k to 1080 conversion for HDMI1.4 compliance

HDMI 2.1 EARC/ARC compliant

HDMI 2.1 Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)

HDCP 2.3 compliant / Dolby Vision Compatible

There may be some confusion because it states that it is HDMI 1.4/2.0b compliant but then mentions some HDMI 2.1 features that it supports. This does not mean that it is fully HDMI 2.1 compliant.

The specific HDMI 2.1 feature that seems to be lacking (and could be a deal breaker for those with current gen gaming systems) is 4k 120Hz.
