miniDSP Tide16 - Holy Grail with 16 Channel Atmos/DTS:X, high SINAD

Interesting. What I did notice is the highs are a bit harsh with digital input with some recordings. My theory is the digital is more transparent to the recording. Good recordings sound glorious though. But, maybe this is some artifacts similar to what you heard. Tough to know for sure.

Not sure what you mean by “digital carries full amplification”?
I'm pretty sure they're isn't a difference in fidelity between the two all else equal.

The active Genelec monitors are limited by the input analog vrms. The digital is not so constrained.

You can measure with REW, you need nothing but REW, a mic, and a sweep with acoustic time reference generated by REW (generator, just choose and save, you can then playback it anywhere you like)

You just don't measure the ordinary way, you use the tab just beside "from file" . It's the same, you just upload to the box the above generated signal, hit start and then playback through your chain as REW waits.

There's a section in REW's help describing how, it's dead easy to do and sometimes is even better as you measure the whole chain as a completely black box.

Edit: as the signal generation is what most people don't know how to do, here's a ridiculous, quick guide:

Choose the channel(s) (marked as 3) you want to measure of course.

(I use 1M length with 96kHz which is a long sweep, others may use shorter as 256k, as it will be even longer with 48kHz)

Doesn't your TV playbacks from a USB stick for example?
That's where you save the generated signal.

REW only listens and start recording as soon as it hears the acoustic timing reference.
When you hit "start", it just waits at "from file" mode, it's the signal that makes it start.
 
Why not just use hdmi from a computer ?
I don't know why I didn't think of that. I wanted a more permanent upstream solution but this could work if I just switch cables manually. Might work.
Edit: I don't think my laptop sends 5.1 LPCM. Just stereo.

Needs no channel at all, or any connection.

All you need is a way to playback the file, a USB stick or whatever.

I know that it’s infinitely easier to swap a cable then it is to get a flash drive download the playback file get it on a driver plug it into a tv.

You only do it once.

-You generate the channels you like.
-You save them at the PC as you will need to load each channel (or both channels, L+R file for example) ) to REW.
-You copy the same files to the flash drive (or wherever)
-you keep it handy as you may want to use it multiple times.

Done.

The only hustle is that you have to load REW (it has a box, you just drag it in) with the SAME file as the one you playback with your speakers, TV, phone or what ever.
People having problems with REW's connections, loops, etc have seen the light this way.

The question is more about whether my digital avp will take my laptop HDMI. It's very fussy.

I think you could add it to your Apple Music library, and then play it back that way with the Apple TV.

regardless of your computer's capabilities, REW cannot generate Multichannel measurement files anyway.

that means that you'll have to route the Mono or Stereo test signal to all of your speakers manually, either using miniDSP's Matrix mixer, or by switching cables around.

Feeding the signal into your Tide16 can be done via Bluetooth, USB, SPDIF, or HDMI. Whatever suits you best.

Thanks. The issue is that my avp is 5.1 LPCM only. Yes I would have that additional issue that REW can't do multichannel.
 
After more research, I am more convinced that the Tide 16 is the best option out there. I think the key thing is miniDSP are committed to long term support with updates, based on how they used a general purpose ARM processor in the Tide 16.

I think my mind is made.
 
You do not need 8k.

All the manufacturers have exited the 8K TV market except Samsung and their 8k products have worse picture quality than the best 4k products.

Disk content is dying there is never going to be an 8k disk format.

There is no next to zero 8K streaming content.

There is an 8k capable kalidescape box however the cost of entry is such that the AVP is the least of your worries an again there is very little to no content.

If you are a gamer then there is some benefit in being able to do 4:4:4 10 bit 4k at 120 fps which you do need HDMI 2.1 for however otherwise you do not need anything beyond HDMI 2.0

If anyone ever decides to push 8k again it’s going to be enough time that your AVP will be up for replacement before it happens.
