miniDSP Tide16 - Holy Grail with 16 Channel Atmos/DTS:X, high SINAD

Perhaps this will interest some here. It is the website of Jennifer Leung, who did the structural design of the Tide16, and includes a link to a PDF discussing the physical design with some illustrative sketches.

Very long thread, any general updates from regulars who have been following this thread?

Hows the performance now that it's in owners hands?
The audio performance is nothing short of spectacular in my opinion. Dirac ART performs just wonderfully. But there should be a non-biased review coming here at some stage and I would assume there would be other reviews published on the unit on the audio review sites.

There are a few glitches in the user interface: Dirac gets sometimes disabled on startup even though it appears to be on according to Tide16 display and the Tide16 input channel information shows a wrong input channel count.

Did you see this update on the miniDSP forum:

”Pay no attention to the "No action required at this time." message at the bottom - it's a trap! Call FedEx immediately at 1-800-463-3339. Say "Clearance Delay" when the automated system asks what you're calling about, which will cause their system to automatically route you to their international shipping department. One of their reps will send you an e-mail containing a DocuSign link to CBP Form 5106, where you can securely provide your SSN or other tax/importer ID info to US Customs. This e-mail may take ~24 hours to arrive. The only field on the CBP form that isn't self-explanatory is the "Title" field to the left of the signature block at the bottom of the form - the correct input for this field is "Importer". If CBP wants to see your invoice, you can provide it to them by attaching it to an e-mail addressed to "[email protected]" with only your tracking number in the subject field - this will auto-route your invoice to the FedEx logistics person handling your case, who will in turn provide it to US Customs. Hope this helps someone.”

I don’t know whether this piece of advice is valid for you but maybe worth investigating.
Mine is stuck in Indianapolis customs. Calling in was not helpful. Hoping miniDSP can unstick it from their end.

Mine has been stuck in Memphis for 9 days now. My next step is to call Customs to see what they have to say.

Reddit has an interesting discussion of this including contact numbers.

At present I would not order directly from MiniDSP. They seem to be unable to fix this problem.

I would order from a US source like Deer Creek.
I suppose miniDSP can do little or nothing to local customs hangups in recipients’ countries. I would just try and push the local officials and FedEx to get it done and sorted. However, the way you pay the customs fees/taxes in advance when purchasing directly from miniDSP is odd, but I suppose there are some regulations in place which require this.

Well good news. Somebody at Minidsp got a hold of somebody higher up in the FedEx food chain than I had access to and apparently they were able to unclog things. It is out of customs hold and I'm now getting an estimated delivery for tomorrow.

After ten days in Memphis .

Fedex seems to be on a roll right now. A couple of days ago I ordered somethng from Costco, and that failed too, damaged in transit. A box of coffee pods and some Tide detergent.

Strange naming coincidence.

Don't forget that US CBP got DOGEd which might be as much to blame as FedEx. My contact at US CBP stopped replying to my business emails about a year ago.

MiniDSP have introduced a software changelog for the Tide16, which is a reassuring and transparent thing to do.
This has two sections - the status of known issues, plus planned new features.
18/05/2026 Rev1.12
Rev 1.12 First release

First official release / Dirac ART/DLBC/Live certified
Known Issues:

  • The currently packaged USB audio implementation has an added latency of 200mS. While fine for audio listening applications, it's not fit for USB audio + Video sync (e.g. PC playing audio to Tide via USB audio stereo). Use HDMI audio from your PC if you plan to sync with video. Future build to solve this limitation with a low-latency/32bit driver. (Note this is specific to USB audio, no other sources have this added latency).
  • Center Spread ATMOS decoder setting should not be turned ON if you do not have a center speaker configuration. Will be forced to off in next build of DC
  • Bug on the speaker configuration: Middle + Front overhead speaker shouldn't be allowed as it's a non standard Dolby Speaker configuration (not allowed by Decoder). Only Front + Rear, or Front+Middle+Rear. New Device console build to solve this next.
  • CEC power off command is not enabled. Will be enabled shortly in the coming build. Volume/Mute all working on all inputs (HDMI/eARC)
  • Minor webGUI issues to be fixed / Will be documented shortly in the manual
New features on the Engineer's ToDo List for upcoming releases (that we can share)
  • Adding support for startup volume
  • Adding support for import of REW EQ files
  • Enabling High Shelf filter on outputs
  • Simplifying the Wifi configuration process with Hotspot mode
  • Documenting the manual BM section better
  • and many more..

Coming from an AVP, and just for fun, what tuner would pair nicely with the Tide16?
There are a handful of standalone DAB tuners left on the market,

Mine is still hung up. I'm trying the form.
