Hi, I am trying out Amazon music and some Ultra HD tracks. I am using the amazon music app on a Google TV device, played over TOSLINK on my minidsp SHD.

Many tracks on Amazon music say they are 24-bit / 48 or even 96khz, but then Amazon music only plays 16-bit / 48khz because it claims my device only supports that. Is this due to
i) TV optical out not supporting higher bitrates
ii) bad cable
iii) minidsp shd optical in only supporting 16 bit / 48 khz ?

Not claiming I can hear a difference, but curious for technical reasons.

Toslink for Hi Res music can be a PITA. It's not what it was initially designed to do. If properly executed there should be no insurmountable hurdles.

USB is much simpler. The medium (copper) is not as ambitious as fiber optics... but it has received tons of development and the kinks have been ironed out.
