Hi ASR community,
I am in the process of building out a new hopefully end game (for me) 2.2 channel system. I previously ran a 5.2 setup with Ascend Acoustics Sierra 2 speakers on an Onkyo TX-NR7100.
New Setup Details:
I am looking forward to tinkering with the Flex HT. At this point I am just waiting on the amp. It's been 2 weeks since ordering so hopefully I will have it in another 2 weeks. In the meantime I was wondering if I can get some input on some questions.
Flex HT Setup Questions:
I read through the Flex HT manual and watched whichever videos I could to supplement my knowledge. Please see below for how I set up Bass Management / Channel routing / Matrix Mixer. Does it look correct for what I want to accomplish, where all audio 2.0/2.1/5.1/7.1 to be down mixed to 2.1. (the x.1 will go to 2x4HD).
Bass Management Above:
a. Given how I have it set up, does it mean both the Sub and Speakers will play bass from 70-120 hz if the audio signal has a subwoofer track?
b. Does muting a channel on this page mean it does not come into play later? I saw a Deer Creek Audio video where they muted all channels that they did not have speakers for. So not sure if I should mute them or not here if I plan on downmixing them later in the matrix mixer?
2. Channel Routing:
1. Copied it from the manual, not much going on here. Curious other than assigning where to place Bass Management Is there really anything else to do here?
Matrix Mixer: I mixed the audio to both channels. Once I get the amp, I'll test out how this sounds if I need the surrounds in there or not and if so at what dB attenuation. Curious if I get a 2.0 input signal with this setup, does it basically not have any to mix here? Since there is no signal to Center and surround channels?

- miniDSP Flex HT Will get LPCM from ATV and UB420 +
- MiniDSP 2x4HD

- FIR Filter Workflow: I’ve been reading up on FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filters for phase linearization, which is new to me. Is REW + rePhase still the gold standard for creating and exporting these? I noticed rePhase hasn’t seen an update since 2019—are there more modern (ideally free/low-cost) alternatives, or is the 2019 build still the best tool for the job?
- Dirac Live & FIR: Since the Flex HT supports the Dirac upgrade, I'm curious about the internal implementation. Does Dirac Live automatically generate and apply FIR filters for mixed-phase correction, or is it mostly sophisticated IIR (Infinite Impulse Response) EQ? Wonder if Dirac is worth it for this 2.2 setup, or if I can accomplish the same and learn some things along the way by doing it manually.
- Also if I am using Dirac and they apply FIRs, does that mean I can't use my own FIRs or that I have no control over how many Taps to allocate to each channel?
