Hello everyone and Good morning . So I have been looking at hot air guns for shrinking my shrink tubes on my owe cables am making. Also things at home and work. I don’t like using a lighter because it can burn the shrink the tube and cause discolor to it. I have looked at a lot of brands and bought 2 only to take them back. I almost bought a Hercules Hot Air gun at Harbor Fright. I was able to see the product and see how it worked and the weight of it in my hands. Call me old fashioned but, it’s to bulky for me. Am now looking at a mini Hot air Gun. Am at the point in my life where I want things to feel comfortable or good in my hands as I’m using it. So does anyone have any suggestions or advice for me? Brands and experiences? Thanks Jeff

All I can say on this is that I got one and my lord it’s way too powerful. It can melt things so fast it’s not even funny. I would just get the smallest lightest least powerful one you can on Amazon.

I have a heat gun and yeah, you don't need much to do heat shrink, probably anything halfway decent will work.

Try your or spouse's hair dryer on high and save some money or

It depends on what size (diameter) and the scale (amount) of what you are intending to make.

If it's just cable boots, tidying up, small cable looms and general small, neat jobs, you can use an inexpensive hot air rework station as they are fully adjustable for air speed, tips and of course accurate temperature. I have one on my bench for actual rework (high temps), but more often than not, use it for heatshrink as it's so precise, compact and can be adjusted to +/-1 degree C.

I've also got a few actual heatguns (makita and milwaukee) but they really only get used for large jobs (rare) where you need to shrink something like a trailer wiring loom etc.

Something like this will do heat shrink with precision, just set the temp to 150 degrees or so.

I have one of these, Master Heat Gun model HG 501:

It has two settings, surface of Mercury hot and solar corona hot. I've had it for more years than I can remember and have used it for everything from shrink wrap to soldering copper pipes—yes, it gets that hot.

I used to use these in the lab at my old day job. Solid piece of gear!

I have a small craft hot air gun, exactly right for shrink tubing.
