I have find that it is hard for me to find any good music - maybe I'm picky, maybe it's something else. But thanks to this thread, I've find many bands I've never heard of - and as I listen RWAKE, it seems that I have find new band for my playlist.

What I've already find, three record labels make music with very decent sound: Out of Line Music (for eg. Bloodred Hourglass), Concord (for eg. Ghost) and Inside Out (for eg. Riverside)

This is an interesting observation for sure. I have to say, I have a dislike for bands that are on Nuclear Blast. That is easy to say because it's a huge label and they have a ton of bands, but I feel a lot of their productions have a similar sound that is.... "modern metal" I guess. It's just very in your face, superficially perfect but dead and lacking any human element because of it. Just go to their YouTube channel and click any of their recent videos:

It does not sound bad, but does it sound good? All of this music seems like it was produced to played back on a ****** radio and some bluetooth speaker, not for a proper stereo. Sorry if I step on anybody's toes here I'm sure given the size of the label they must have some good sounding bands. But if I just randomly click through their videos - this is what's wrong with modern metal. And it's not the music or the skill of the musicians, it's like you take this perfect steak and you mush it for no reason then cook it well done so nobody will take offense and it's like...you could've done that with something else. Why waste this perfect steak.

Interesting you should ask, I'm actually working on a Sigberg Audio playlist with that exact topic at the moment. Perhaps I can share it early here, and you guys can help me fill it up. It currently has 51 songs, I'm aming for 100.

If you like little lord fentanyl, I highly recommend seeing Sessante (primus, puscifer, and a perfect circle) each do three sets of three songs with no pauses between sets (except two intermissions) progressively mixing up the bands as they go. The last song, everyone plays.

There were, but they were (and are) wrong. I can name numerous bands where the singer actually SINGS. Real melodies. And the guitar playesr are playing notes IN ADDITION to the lowest notes on their instrument.

I didn’t think my point was particularly subtle, but I think you missed it. The line between”music” and “noise” is purely subjective. It is not uncommon for generations to differ over where that line is.

(Though admittedly, my kids who are into metal lean more towards classic stuff, or modern clean metal like Sabaton and Volbeat, and would find a lot of what I like a tough listen. So it’s not just age/generational)

We listed to Rammstein "Reise Reise" the other day, I thought it sounded great.

Partly metal but a little different is Praxis "Transmutation Mutatis Mutandis", which I think sounds fantastic.

Finally, stepping out a bit, Xenakis "Pléiades" part 1 is literally 100% metal. Glorious. There's a few recordings you can review.

I got your point, and it's not necessarily subjective. I guess you can argue that anything is art, and any sound can be music, but I disagree.

What objective criteria do you use to determine if something is music?

Metal-adjacent genres or material without at least a serving of screamo/growlo barely make it for me, but taste is personal. If you require clean/melodic singing that’s doubtless a personal preference also.

The addition of sub-bass (including synth in particular) in recent decades has vastly improved sonics generally for many genres.

For the idiomatic meaning of noise as ‘sound I don’t like’ sure, but for the technical meaning there may be a noise component in the material, but my guess is that’s not the totality.
