Very interesting site. I have been enjoying reading the discussion and very comprehensive measurements on speakers across the range of the cost spectrum.

My understanding of all this is relatively limited, so I am hoping someone can help me to understand an issue.

I am considering purchasing a new pair of speakers, that would need to live on an actual bookshelf. This placement obviously has some down sides, but it is the only thing that will work for me. In looking through the measurements here and thinking about my needs, I was wondering if someone could explain to me how this might impact my review of the data presented on this site.

I have read (on other sites) people focus on port location, but from my understanding that doesn't really matter very much (the shear number of bottom ported designs would seem to reinforce the notion that a boundary close to a port is not the end of the world and other reading would seem to suggest that very close may have less comb filtering than some intermediate distances).

What I don't see mentioned very often is the concept of baffle step compensation. In theory, wouldn't a speaker designed for near wall placement have less baffle step compensation?

And if so, how does this play into some of the spinorama measurements and preference scores?

For example, when I look at the Revel M16 review I worry that with my intended placement the built in bass boost around 100hz might become problematic. Is that a reasonable concern? On the other hand, would something like the kef R3, if placed close to a boundary, actually have more of a bass boost in the lower frequencies and hence actually measure closure to the M16's response a few feet out from the wall?

Sorry if this is a silly question - but I would really appreciate it if someone could help me get some clarity!
