Any man with even a tiny bit of common sense knows when he's been whipped. ;)

Unfortunately the 103 does not have S/PDIF input. It also doesn't have balanced output which is what I may have used in the measurements here.

I could try testing it with USB drive and see how it does.
I'm "late to this party" by more than 6 years, but I'd love to see your test results for the OPPO 103 (if you still have one in your possession) because it is the Blu-ray player I'm currently using...

I'm extremely late to this, but I joined and am posting to ask to see if I understand the issue that Amirm displayed in the OP. Does it mean that the lower sound pressure wave input, that the output is biased to be lower, and the opposite being true as well for higher dB input? I have a BDP-105D (audio section is identical) and there's always been a harsh sound to me with it, which some others who have owned them also talk about. And I'm trying to get to some kind of answer on it.

Oddly enough I also have a BDP-103D which sounds more normal? (Well it sounds practically identical to my two pieces of hardware running PCM179X series DACs anyway.) I have A/B blind tested them (only using CDs so far) and struggled to find a difference, but when I listen to the 105 through HMDI or USB I often feel fatigued or like I'm getting a headache.

“The main sonic characteristics of pure copper vs pure silver conductors can be summarized as follow
While copper tends to sound warmer and has more body it is a bit slower and less harmonically rich, silver does exactly the opposite. Silver tends to sound livelier, while offering more clarity and harmonic richness but at the cost of a colder character, thinner and lighter body.”
;) So funny:facepalm:

I don't think you're imagining the fatigue; I too experience fatigue when listening to my Oppo BDP-105D. I don't get headaches but instead I hear ringing after long sessions. That said, I will say there's less fatigue when I listen to my small collection of SACD & DVD Audio discs as opposed to CD's. In any case, my main use for the 105 has been for its exceptional Video quality even though it's only 1080P. I have it connected to my 77 inch 4K OLED, and it looks nearly as good as when I'm feeding the TV my Sony 4K player! That's the main reason I have kept it for so long; I have an extensive library of Blu-ray 1080P discs, and slowly building my 4K library.

The Oppo 105 has problems if you run the player below "level 75". For low level listening the voltage regulator for the sabre is too bad. Change the regulator (Sparkos for example) and the problem is solved. That is why the 103 sounds better, the analog stage is missing.

Not sure I understand are you using the OPPO as a pre/pro?

I haven't really noticed the fatigue so much when watching films on it (extracting audio and sending through hdmi), but playing audio over the various digital inputs definitely can. I almost think that what's happening is that the player itself it emitting a high frequency whine cause it feels not-unlike playing tones above 15khz to me. But I don't have any device that would be able to hear that.

I will say that I think I hear ringing after using it for PC games or movies though. I haven't done an A/B vs the 103 in these scenarios to compare though. Partly because the 103's front HDMI isn't working. It can see the hdmi is plugged in but it can't get any signal through it.
