Measurements: DIRAC ART vs A1 EVO Acoustix in a 2.2 setup

Hi all,

For those of you who are interested, here are some mdat measurements of my setup when using no dsp with time allignment for subs, A1 acoustix up to 500 Hz and DIRAC ART in various correction windows (300, 1000 & full range).
All targets were set to + 6 dB DIRAC.

Reason for this post is if people want to decide on ART purchase or not.

This is the 2nd set of posted measurements sinds the room has changed significantly.

You should fix this left channel reflection:

I'm afraid it's in the living room and correcting that will be hard. Could that be the side wall? There is also a column for ventilation etc. behind the left speaker.
Next to the right speaker is a curtain. So the distance between the left and right speaker from the side wall is 55 cm. But the column is closer and there is no column on the right side.

I can move the speakers further form the side wall. I could do both to 70 cm instead of the 55 cm it's now.
Would that have an effect on that reflection?

However, I did play around a lot with no DSP and the current spacing creates a more equilateral triangle (2.75 m from MLP to speaker and 2.65 m between speakers).
Speakers are 70 cm from the back wall. Pushing the speakers closer inside does reduce the placing of guitars a bit (with no effect on vocals, drums or bass though).
So a bit hesistant to change speaker positioning.

I will ignore frequency response altogether. To me what's fascinating is time domain. I'm learning to use wavelet spectrogram, since some top engineers and calibrators mentioned it as their main tool for subwoofer alignment. It basically shows peak energy in the room per frequency and time (not sure if I expressed it correctly).

If anyone tried to align subs using wavelet, they know how hard it is to get it right. ART graph looks amazing to my eyes, except 200-300hz slight anomaly, basically perfect time alignment down to 50hz. EVO looks just bad. I've tried playing with EVO twice, but both times I could tell bass timing was off even by listening. Could be user error, don't know, haven't bothered since. Now I want ART in my room.

This is interesting, but I have a few suggestions regarding the presentation of your measurements:
  • Use Var smoothing, or 1/48, for frequency response. 1/6 is much too aggressive and hides information about the resolution of any peaks in the response.
  • If you want to compare frequency responses, show them in the same plot.
  • If you want to show waterfalls of Dirac ART, show the region from, say, 10-200 Hz. ART operates up to 150 Hz, so showing the response all the way up to 20 kHz is a digression.

Thanks! These plots clearly show that Dirac ART is an improvement. You appear to have a problematic room mode at about 55 Hz that ART is unable remove completely, possibly due to the location of your subs? Not sure how audible it is, though.
 
Yeah it's dual front subs and that node shows itself in all room sims (4 x 7 m, couch in the middle).

Since it's not a studio but a living room Im very satisfied with the results.
