I use the same preamp & never even used the phono pre as I had others, then one day I did..
My TT is 12' or so from the 658 & yes I have to turn it up compared to streaming but the 658 phono section surprised me & ran my best 45 stuff threw it & was impressed. It is still this way. I'm sure ill try something differant for phono stage down the road just for kicks but I feel the internal section of the 658 is good. I also run Grado, a Sonata 3
