i have mcintosh MC7106. Should i sell it and get a new emotiva or monolith or arcam power amp or should i keep it?

Please help me decide.
Thank you all for your valuable inputs.

yes... ... no... How should we know?

What would be your reasons for selling it? Need more power, need the cash, don't like the looks, need more/fewer channels?

Looking to buy a newer amp. Do you think they will perform better than the MC7106?

Didn't you just ask on 7-jun / 10-jun if you should buy the Mcintosh ?

So you bought it and the preamp and now have cold feet ?

It probably isn't the most collectable of mcintosh, but 6 channels ensures a longer life assuming power supply hangs in there.
No autoformers....

Unfortunately, the cr12, well, not as collectible.

Keep the 7106. It’s six channels bridgeable to three x 300w… You are unlikely to find something similar and it sounds quite a bit better than any Emotiva amps I’ve heard. If you want to spend money, just get it checked and order a box (if you don’t have one) directly from McIntosh.

thanks for replying.
what kind of box?

Where would I find details on how that was determined? And to learn what controls were used to ensure it was an actual difference in sound?

Call them. Tell them you want a box. They'll transfer you to one of two people. Tell them the model and they'll tell you how long it will be. Usually about $75

What price would you hope to get if you sold it? McIntosh equipment holds its value well, though stereo, 2-ch, do better than multi-channel, etc. If you don't have a romantic attachment to the McIntosh brand, you might sell it and buy a new class D amp for less than you got for it.

There are a number of options for 6-channel class D amps. E.g. this one from VTV Amplifiers for USD1560. Such a class D amp would be smaller, lighter, run cooler, and (possibly), sound better than the Mac.

Why do I need to determine anything more than I already have? It’s an opinion. This forum is filled with them. Questions like that apply to a different experience of the hobby all together from what I enjoy. I don’t pull out an OmniMic 40k when I drop the needle on Ella.

Feel free to gather those measurements on their behalf… May want to wait for them to ask for them first though, I didn’t see it come up in their question. ;-)

Shipping box. I have them for all my Mc gear… They are (or were) only $50 shipped directly from McIntosh; they are well-constructed double boxes designed for the specific piece of equipment you order them for, a worthwhile investment. The glass and tubes on their equipment are fragile and I’ve appreciated having them ahead of time when we’ve moved, I’ve had them serviced, and when I’ve lent them out to friends or sold them.

It really is an incredibly flexible, well-built amplifier. I replaced a pair of Emotiva 1000w mono-blocks with one that I bridged x3 across the front speakers without a wince and have had no performance issues.

Emotiva makes good gear, I’ve owned 3-4 amps and at least a couple of preamps of theirs and was pretty happy with all while I had them, although had to send a 5-channel in for blown fuses (damaged my speaker in the process) and a preamp for a dead channel, so unsure about the build quality. I’d say I prefer their preamps’ performance over their amps, for whatever that’s worth.

Just prefer the Mc sound and detail retrieval quite a bit more than most anything else I’ve tried… Opinions definitely vary on that one, as with most everything else.

Hope you find something you enjoy!

As fond as I am of the amp, this is also a fun idea! Class D amps have come a long way, I hear…
