Matching REW with Wiim Amp PEQ

hey, how do you send REW test_tones from pc/mac to ultra? it's usb seem to be either file_in or audio_out,

is it -> pc/mac (usb) -> dac -> wiim_ultra (analog in) -or- pc/mac (analog out) -> wiim ultra (analog in) ?
Line out from laptop in my case. 3.5mm to 2 x rca adapter cable on the WiiM side. 10m 3.5mm trs stereo cable on the laptop side.

On the computer (Win PC) the audio device has to be set up properly. No enhancer, filter or whatever.

At first I had the laptop via HDMI on AVR/screen and wanted to get HDMI out into the WiiM Ultra. But to no avail, the ARC input won't work that way (for me).

The way around that would be HDMI ARC of WiiM Ultra to a display with that can passthrough audio. Laptop connected to TV for REW sweeps.

Yes Wiim USB is only files for input, not USB Audio.

Schiit Eitr 2 or Topping D10S adds top notch USB Audio input, to any DAC without it.

The Wiim USB does a great job at USB Audio OUTPUT, say to a better headphone amp

How do you get the time delay measurements this way? Do you hit "measure" on REW and then play the file on Wiim?

Enable "add timing ref" in the Generator.

Then in the Measure dialog, set "Playback: From file", click start, REW will measure the noise floor then wait indefinitely for you to play the sweep.

Clock drift and timing is calculated from the timing ref encoded into the sweep.

Great, thank you. I didn't realize REW would wait for me to play the sweep.
 
I have been experimenting with moving mic method. Im not 100% sure because I read conflicting advice whether I should occupy MLP or not while doing it?

I think you will get different opinions. I include the MLP. If I were averaging three seats across a couch, I would include the middle seat, not skip it. MMM should cover the listening area you care about. For one seat, center it around the MLP; for multiple seats, include those seats and accept that the result is more of a compromise.

absolutley i would include it, if MLP means "main seating position".

every measure has it's freq. response, at the end you want to see the common area (intersection) of all, that's your freq. response, if common area has issues, you want to alter on that

I would suggest not to sit in the MLP while doing MMM measurements. You body may cause some short distance reflections that the mic will pick up in the measured response, but there is some evidence that such effects are not audible. To be safe, remove yourself from the MLP.
 
I used to use a big pile of pillows at MLP with YPAO, RoomFit and Audyssey.

But never found a difference vs. an empty place with just the tripod.

I can imagine that there is a difference. Especially with my sofa being big and all leather, no textile, not even the pillows. But it's not enough so that I see it. There is no harm in taking more measurements with different approaches though. Every living room is different.

This is one of those things that seem like a good idea, but turns out to be wrong. I agree it's not intuitive.

From memory - since I don't have the book in front of me now - Floyd Toole in Sound Reproduction describes some experiments done in a movie theater where a microphone picks up differences in the frequency response (100 - 200 Hz region, if I remember correctly) for two different heights of mic placements. These correspond to seated vs. standing listeners. Subjective reports from the listeners are that sitting vs. standing sound the same. These tests were done in a movie theater, but the relevant reflections come from nearby seat backs, so the phenomenon should apply to normal listening rooms as well.
 
i have a table in front of me, but for measurements, i'll remove it from the room.

table would effect my eq adjustments overall, but it's not in one and the same place all the time.

so it's subjective, but to me optimizing freq. response for one place or accounting everything in the room isn't ideal.

room+still_furniture interactions with speakers seems safer. sound stays about the same, so when i go to kitchen, i still get good balanced sound

Helps if you're outside or doing MMM measurements, as it reduces LF wind noise a bit.

For sweep measurements indoors, there's no point.
