Matching REW with Wiim Amp PEQ

Im gonna reply to the others, too once I got a chance to retest - but yes I had already turned down the subwoofer. Its at the clutch point where a hair below suddenly drops it super quiet. It was a lot worse than this when I had it on 12 o clock.

You are touching on listener preference a bit here. Sometimes what initially sounds too quiet is actually the point where the sub becomes more integrated with the mains and less localized. A strong room peak around 40–60 Hz can create a sense of excess weight or impact that people get accustomed to, so reducing it can subjectively sound thinner even if the response is objectively smoother.

I would go with a common recommendation from AVR setups of 30%, no less.

If it works good for you at ~10% why not. To me it sounds like the wrong knob to do all/most of the corrections.
 
I dont mean quiet subjectively I mean the bass was gone from the measurement. The sub knob is already very low.
 
I have spent many hours measuring and EQ-ing in REW, and then painstakingly copying the filters into WiiM room fit. None of my results are as good as what WiiM can do by itself. On both devices I have the target curve set to B&K.

It seem that the filters developed in REW tend to have less bass. The predicted results in REW match the B&K curve very well, but then after putting these values in the WiiM and running another capture on REW the actual measured response is always nearly flat rather than the downward slope B&K curve.

I suspect the problem has to do with my setting the target SPL in the EQ tab. I am EQ-ing from 20-300 Hz with no boosts.

I think RoomFit is good. Doesn't work out everywhere for me. But adding stuff from REW below 100Hz is easy.

I'm using the same umik-1 w/cal file on both REW (PC) and room fit (iphone).
Yes, definitely better than built-in iphone mic, though even that seems to work well enough in a pinch.
 
Are you sure about the WiiM Ultra Q units?
I'm using RBJ Q (half gain) in REW as you suggested.

I really think the main problem is my setting of the target SPL level for the match curve.

I use umik-2 and cal file with phone/roomfit but I don't think that makes any difference. Umik-1 would be the same
 
Alright, works with my tablet.

I see proper recommendations 30-200Hz. Quite different per selected target curve. Looks good so far.
 
Yeah, room fit works great on the iPhone with umik-1. I was hoping for even better results with REW, but it seems the only think it's helping me with are the visualizations.
In my experience so far, the WiiM works well enough I don't have to rely on REW. I am pretty surprised by it performance.
 
I see high effort to meet the target curve from RoomFit. Like flatness target 0-1. Some would prefer less.

I wouldn't compare it to REW besides how good matching the results are. To learn, see and configure in detail it's far superior. But for a quick fix, for people who don't want to explore the rabbithole much, it's once again incredible what WiiM achieves.
 
I am still not a fan of WiiM subwoofer and speaker sync. I think REW is and manually adjusting delay is much closer. WiiM wanted +15ms delay to subs where as REW settled on +6ms delay on subs. Nearfield/office setup environment for reference.

I spent a lot of time measuring, testing, and reading all I could about the various time delay estimation options in REW. The phase match, phase slope match, and IR match, and others including wavelets. All gave different results. I don't see any way of knowing if there is one best answer. Sometimes it agreed with WiiM, sometimes not. But then it also doesn't agree with itself, so there's something to consider. When there was ambiguity, my conclusion was to discard the big delay numbers (i.e., 30-52ms) and keep the small ones (3-6ms range). Also, fine tuning by ear helps confirm the selection.

I love REW, and all the amazing analysis it can do. However, when all was said and done, the WiiM Ultra made as good or better set of PEQ filters to integrate my sub. I used REW to measure and confirm the results. I don't think there is anything wrong with REW, and if you are a tech geek like myself having all this science at your fingertips is really part of the fun. It's just that the WiiM makes it so much easier to get it right the first time with very little effort.

It could be my impression of REW was slightly soured by the need to manually type in 30 numbers for each EQ session. Is there any easier way?

It's nice to have both.

It's nice to have both.
I agree it’s nice to have both. My point wasn’t really that WiiM is bad or REW is automatically right. I use both.

For my office setup, WiiM sets the sub level (well sub level you have to adjust manually so I use REW for that) and applies the PEQ. I let RoomFit suggest the mains correction from about 100–4000 Hz, then I handle the sub more manually by looking for obvious modes/nulls.

I also notice RoomFit can occasionally recommend similar overlapping filters or stack corrections so I’ll average those out.

The main area where I still prefer REW is delay/crossover verification. WiiM suggested roughly +15 ms on the sub, but manual REW sweeps at different delay values showed about +6 ms gave the smoothest summation around my 70 Hz crossover. So I’m fine using WiiM for filters, but I still want REW to confirm.

I have a longer standing desk setup where I never did the FR+sub alignment. Just recently did it and it wants +8ms for FR. It doesn't make sense to me as FR are very near and line of sight, the sub is further away under the table. To be sure about these recommendations I think it's best to measure with REW and also take a different room position relative to the nearfield setup. If there is a real delay from a component, it will be there constantly. If it's just mic position vs. speaker position, one could chose to ignore that.

In my case it makes sense because my monitors are further away since mounted and sub is closer. I also tested with mains delayed to be certain but it got lesser results

Good point. The total measurable delay has two components: delay due to processing, and delay due to propagation.
Only the propagation component will vary with speaker distance. This should equal almost exactly distance/velocity.
 
That's a good looking result overall.

I had problems with a room mode in a larger space emerging at 38hz, coming back at 76hz and so on.. very wide room, big speakers. Which made me explore how I can make the WiiM Ultra handle that. Initial suggestions were in the range of the default 24db. In REW it's important to tune the equalizer, but also look at the settings for Q - I think "RBJ Q" is default and that is what the WiiM uses.

Not sure if it's wise to do that, but WiiM RoomFit also supports filter stapling. So one can do filter 1 -12db at a frequency and filter 2 the same again - haven't measured that, if it just adds up or has an exponential effect. Nor tried to find proper Q values for that. It cancelled the frequency out more or less completely. ;)
hey, how do you send REW test_tones from pc/mac to ultra? it's usb seem to be either file_in or audio_out,

is it -> pc/mac (usb) -> dac -> wiim_ultra (analog in) -or- pc/mac (analog out) -> wiim ultra (analog in) ?

I use the analog output jack on my macbook and connect to the Wiim Ultra's line in. Works great. I also tried saving REW test clips to wav files on a usb stick and inserting this into the Ultra to eliminate any possibility that the macbook's dac could be effecting things, but I got the exact same measured results both ways.

Line in is easier and allows for acoustic test tones so it it the winner.
