I'm archiving screen shots of this email everywhere I can. It makes me smile so much!
The Master Musicians of Joujouka/Jajouka are a group from a village in the Rif mountains of Morocco that have been playing their version of a kind of Sufi folk music for centuries. Until the middle of last century they were still in the Mediæval era. Their collision with both modernity and the West began when they got a gig as the house band at Mohamed Hamri's restaurant in Tangiers. Various "celebrated" Westerners met them there. Brian Jones was one and visited Jajouka in 68 where he record music that was later released as Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka (1972 Rolling Stones Records) which (some say) kicked off World Music as a thing (as a genre of commerce). Thankfully they have so far managed to navigate their road to the World Stage. In the following excellent recording the band sings one of their standards inspired by Brian Jones.
The World Stage is however a really weird place. Here they are playing together with The Orb at the spectacular Palais Badii in Marrakesh as a platoon of fashion models in Dior costumes walk a catwalk so long you might expect some of them to colapse from the exertion. I love The Orb and that they help bring attention to The Musicians but I'm not sure they improve things musically. The best thing about the fashion show is that there's a real cat stalking among the chicks on that catwalk.
And if like me you like Ornette Coleman, go back and listen to Midnight Sunrise on the album Dancing In Your Head.
