Below is a list of links to comparison charts for the major types of hardware reviewed, measured and tested on ASR. They will be updated as more reviews are done.

A few notes:
  • APx555 measurements are not static like they appear in the screenshots. There is a certain amount of variation in the results. As such, the values in the charts below are rounded to the nearest dB. The hidden decimal values are used for ranking only.
  • For each chart I've calculated a geometric mean for the dataset, which is a type of average that compensates for skewing due to values which are either very large or very small relative to the set. I've also calculated the absolute deviation from the geomean ("GMAD"). It's an indication of variance, i.e., of how far on average the measured values are from the geomean in either a positive or negative direction.
  • I'm still updating the charts and providing ranked links to reviews according to @digicidal's idea. 3/22 complete.
Descriptions of chart legends are included in the expandable notes below.
SINAD
  1. >120dB (>20 bits): Provably inaudible noise and distortion.
  2. 109dB—119dB (18 bits—20 bits): Well beyond 16-bit (CD) resolution.
  3. 96dB—108dB (16 bits—18 bits): Meets and exceeds 16-bit (CD) resolution.
  4. 85dB—95dB (14.3 bits—16 bits): Does not meet 16-bit (CD) resolution.
  5. <85dB (<14.3 bits): Performance is below the minimum lenient threshold defined in this thread.
  • SINAD results are presented after averaging the R&L channels. The bandwidth is 20Hz—20kHz.
  • Since performance is physically limited by the noise and distortion of the engineered circuit, the unique limits of each piece of tested hardware can be assessed using the SINAD ratio, which represents the noise and distortion-free operating range in dB.
  • SINAD is equivalent to both SFDR and THD+N, though the latter is in percent:
    • 0dB SINAD = 100% THD+N
    • 20dB SINAD = 10% THD+N
    • 40dB SINAD = 1% THD+N
    • 60dB SINAD = 0.1% THD+N
    • 80dB SINAD = 0.01% THD+N
    • 100dB SINAD = 0.001% THD+N
    • 120dB SINAD = 0.0001% THD+N
  • One of the simplest ways to gauge SINAD is to compare it to 16-bit CD dynamic range. 1 bit equals 6.02dB, making the maximum dynamic range of CDs 96.3dB (this is without considering the effects of noise-shaping dither in the digital mastering process, which typically detracts 3dB). This means that playback equipment should be capable of a SINAD of at least 96.3dB to ensure that all information of the encoded audio signal is reproduced in its entirety.
    • For perspective, the highest measured SINAD value is approximately 123dB (20.4 bits) for the Audio Precision APx555 analyzer.
  • It's also useful to consider SINAD values in terms of dBFS. 0dBFS references the maximum output of a digital signal without clipping. -120dBFS is provably inaudible even without taking into account psychoacoustic masking or equal loudness curves. Research by Louis Fielder from 1981 and 1995 supports this claim.

SNR
  1. 76%—100%: Tier 1 (Best)
  2. 51%—75%: Tier 2
  3. 26%—50%: Tier 3
  4. <25%: Tier 4 (Worst)
  • SNR results are presented averaging the R&L channels. The bandwidth is 20Hz—20kHz.
  • The SNR ratio expresses the difference in power between a reference signal and the noise floor of the device. It does not take into account distortion (i.e., the amplitude of spurious tones adjacent to the main signal when plotted in an analyzer's FFT). While the noise floor may stay relatively stable, distortion is sure to rise as output increases.
  • The SNR value as presented in this thread's charts is calibrated to a very low voltage (50 millivolts) to approximate IEM sensitivity.
  • SNR unfortunately cannot be ranked in the same way as SINAD since it less clearly correlates to ideal performance. The measurement results are therefore organized by quartiles, with blue representing the highest tier of measured performance and red, worst.
Max Power
  1. 76%—100%: Tier 1 (Best)
  2. 51%—75%: Tier 2
  3. 26%—50%: Tier 3
  4. <25%: Tier 4 (Worst)
  • Continuous power measurements are made by driving both R&L channels and recording the result before the onset of clipping. This means that the results will reflect very different distortion levels.
  • The adequacy of an amplifier's maximum continuous power is highly dependent on whether it drives speakers or headphones, their sensitivity, power requirements and the application, such as whether you are using them at home or a studio, how loud you will play them and, for speakers, the size of the space you want to fill.
  • As such, measurement results are organized by quartiles, with blue representing the highest tier of measured performance and red, worst.
Headphone Amplifier Output Impedance
  1. <1Ω: Excellent
  2. 1Ω—3Ω: Good
  3. 3Ω—10Ω: Fair
  4. >10Ω: Poor
  • Output impedance is calculated after measuring the difference in output voltage between an open circuit and a loaded circuit, the load being 33.1Ω.
  • Output impedance can be ranked by measured value due to its relationship to frequency response.
  • Impedance varies with frequency and is a physical characteristic of headphone and amplifier construction. A loose rule is that the output impedance of the source (i.e., headphone amp) should be about 8 times less than the input impedance of the load (i.e., the headphones) to avoid frequency response changes. Common headphone nominal impedances are 33Ω, 300Ω and 600Ω, although IEM impedances may be lower, such as 8Ω—16Ω.
Finally, please don’t take the measured values too seriously. It should also be clear that these comparison charts are more for convenience and should not serve as a buyer's guide. As @amirm and others have shown in reviews and discussions, there is no obvious correlation between price and performance in general, or SINAD and price in particular.
