Master AI (Artificial Intelligence) Discussion/News Thread

Venture capital unconstrained !!

Twas ever thus ... but we could solve actual problems at vast scale with that investment. You know, actual existential problems like decarbonisation of the means of production and distribution, etc. Instead we get fresh tunnels in the rabbit warrens of human boredom. Refer to what @pablolie has been posting (no offence) but why not just enjoy watching a real f*cking cat?

edit: I should add that there's nothing wrong (per se) with trivia/fun with imaginary cats :)
Boli is in no way imaginary.

New Ai developed material as light as foam but as strong as steel. May have application in speaker cone design?

The article notes that the material "made using machine learning and a 3D printer". Despite this the headline refers to 'AI'. All the things we do with computers that have/had perfectly cromulent descriptive names that can possibly be herded under that heading now are. For the clicks. We can speculate that half of the 'AI' boom is lazy editors.

And these tools aren't much or anything like the LLM-based chatbots that have captured the popular imagination (they may use a natural language interface in some cases, which is a useful invention if we don't anthropomorphise). Hype is like an all-encompassing foam that's stronger than real.

I see that diyaudio.com has developed a new policy that no longer allows the posting of AI content in threads on that site. Translations being a notable exception.

The policy and reasons are laid out here, link. I think it is an excellent idea and the reasoning is sound.

@amirm what are your thoughts, especially with regard to a similar policy for ASR?

cheers

I would support this - with an exception for threads specifically discussing AI, in an appropriate sub forum. Such as this one. Though I don't see an obvious problem with AI generated images - as long as they are not represented as being non-AI - or in other ways used to create falsehoods.

Learn something new every day... didn't know robots have their own sport now....

There are a lot of them, often as part of teaching program for students. Robot soccer started with small, inexpensive wheeled robots pushing the ball around. Now it has humanoid leagues too.

On the motor racing side there was Roborace, and now A2RL with on and off road formulas plus drone racing.

This is the first time I see such a policy. Love it!

An interesting point from the recent UK gov. report on a trial of Copilot within the Department of Business and Trade - it's apparently providing better assistance than many existing assistive technologies. Most coverage concentrates on the marginal benefit it provides for most users on average, the benefits often being cancelled out by the extra time spent correcting its mistakes, especially in Excel and PowerPoint.

More "ship it first, secure it later" from Anthropic this time. They've identified ways their new file creation feature can leak user data, but rather than fix it before release they've made a blog post about the risks and let the users decide whether to try it or not. If there's one thing that we should have learned by now about shipping non-secure defaults, it's that a significant number of people won't change those defaults to something that is actually secure, resulting in data leaks. This is even worse - there aren't any safe settings to change to, so they're trusting that users won't try it with anything valuable, and blaming the user if it goes wrong.

Good discussion with Deezer CEO and Fantano regarding A.I. Generated music on streaming services

Good discussion with Deezer CEO and Fantano regarding A.I. Generated music on streaming services

Very interesting stats.

30% of all the tracks uploaded to Deezer are AI-generated.

70% of the AI-generated tracks are associated with fraud (fake bot activity).

What is the definition of AI generated here? Does it only mean when the whole song has been created bottom up by AI. Or does it include tracks where the song is composed by a human - but AI tools are used (such as including AI voices)

The CEO says that number is about music generated straight from Suno etc. Later they talk about music with AI generated elements but it doesn't sound like those are included.

Again, again, again...
Please, stop using 'Grok'.
The harms it causes might not be immediately obvious to the casual user, but they are very real, and are increasingly felt in the actual lives of members of the ASR community.
If that matters to you, don't use 'Grok'.
