Master AI (Artificial Intelligence) Discussion/News Thread

Working day to day with AI. I can bet they will learn (are already elarning) how to circumvent these, video advices in a matter of picoseconds ... They may not just care enough ...

Hmmm, the behaviours and outputs you refer to in that post and previously are happening in a way, but not really as you describe via wild anthropomorphism.

Nope. LLM does resolve problems. Does ask questions and has proven they can respond to what they perceive as important. Again we tend to comfort ourselves by seeing these as dumb. Do so at your own risks. These machines are learning at a rate unfathomable to the humans mind

@amirm has created a separate thread where members can post mention of useful applications for A.I.

Using AI for 'Vibe coding' seems to be used by lots of more less experienced programmers and hobbyist.
The problem is that programmer is not thinking about how the problem should be solved and coding in good way.

programmers now spend time using AI to code then spending time reviewing and modifying it (by more senior programmers). The whole process makes dumber programmers.

I think that powerful local LLM's is the future they work quite well on the MacOS M1 chips.

A.I. is credited with creating a demand for housing in San Francisco that exceeds the supply.

Ahead of Anthropic and OpenAI going public with their stock, The New York Times reports some home sellers are asking for stock instead of cash. (gift link below)

I know I saw that as well. Ai has created a mess in more ways then expected. I think that I read in the NYT that many managers of tech teams as getting concerned about the cost of using AI for coding as tokens add up fast for ChatGPT and Claude. Managers are asking employers to use local LLM's for tasks that don't need the power/cost of the 'big boys'. Also large data centers are putting a strain on the water supply that needs to be used to cool all the computers and strain on the utility grid. I remember the Dot com boom it collapsed maybe AI will have the same fate ?!

The whole world is going on about how great Grok 4.5 and GPT 5.6 meanwhile me in europe, am still waiting for either to drop...

Start-ups are selling training data to artificial intelligence companies - paying contract workers to make their jobs obsolete. (gift link below)

As if AI bubble couldn't get any crazier....

Sometimes things like this don't work out as planned. I knew someone that was an early employee of a company during the Dot Com bubble and was told by his accountant not to sell his stock (he had an opportunity to do so) but rather borrow against his stock so he didn't have to pay taxes so he did that. Within 3 years the value of his stock went from $12,000,000 to $0 (company filed for bankruptcy) and he lost his job and he still owed several million dollars that he borrowed against his stock.

What about AI 1968:facepalm:

Recently, I came across a curious snippet of news in a video on the "France24 English" YT news channel, which nevertheless made sense when I thought about it. It was buried in the video and not related to the video title, so I wouldn't be able to find it again. Perhaps an AI could watch all videos of recent weeks on that channel and find the snippet.

The news mentioned how the AI bubble is affecting the marriage matchmaking market in South Korea. Apparently, employees of Samsung and SK Hynix have now risen to the top of the "desirability" rankings of bachelors/bachelorettes looking to get married, above the normally most sought-after prospects such as doctors, lawyers and business owners. This is due to the AI memory windfall bonuses that Samsung and SK Hynix have agreed to pay their employees, on the order of US$ 400,000 (is this annual???) per employee, which is a fortune in a country where the median annual income is US$ 30,000. Memory fab nerds, rejoice! The spouse of your dreams is within reach!

Is a similar trend happening with Micron employees, I wonder? The video did not mention Micron. I imagine this will affect not just bachelors/bachelorettes. A few married employees might view their existing spouses with a new, more critical eye (unless said spouse is also working for one of the big three memory manufacturers).

If the AI bubble bursts soon, and the five-year supply contracts turn out to have escape clauses, will it lead to a flurry of divorces, I wonder? HBM may turn out to refer to High Bandwidth Marriage.

I’m so old I remember the dot com bubble.

The internet collapsed and never recovered.

I know. I worked as contract programmer for many dot com companies they all went under even DEC went under 1

Just an unjustifiably optimistic thought:

AI will force the transition to solar and nuclear.

I have been skeptical about solar and batteries, but cost cuts and reliability improvements are in sight.

Nuclear is going to be needed as a supplement.

Nuclear is going to be needed as a supplement.

I’ve seen what it did to Bruce Banner so I’ll take a pass on the nuclear supplement if you don’t mind, I’m perfectly happy with my Vit D3 and K2 along with Vit B12.

As Adam Tooze points out (around minute 14:40), the Manhattan Project ultimately gave rise to treaties, inspections, and international governance. AI, by contrast, is being steered by commercial incentives, quarterly earnings, hyperscale competition and questionable trilionair(s). We seem to have decided that technology capable of reshaping society deserves less collective oversight than technology capable of destroying it. That's quite a historical inversion.

The dot com bubble, you say? The YT channel "Casual Finance" relates the AI bubble to previous financial bubbles, including to the dot com bubble, while analyzing the mechanism, in this 18 minute YT video:
