Markaudio CHN 110 building and comparisons with Genelec 8340 SAM monitors

I had two listener over for some coffe and a listening session . One comment was ” This speakers sounds as foot tapping as a pair of Linn Kan:s but with much better and deeper bass ”. Another comment was ” the sound is slightly to polite compared to the best ” .

Then I told the price of the amplifier ( Aiyima a04, 50 dollars ) and the drivers ( 120 dollars for both ) and the listeners thought it was great value.

The dac used was Yamaha wxc50 without the preamp option - meaning its a good sounding dac but nowhere near the best on the market. The sound from Yamaha wxc50 used as a dac from my computer is spacious but lacks a little dynamics.

After listening for many days now, the chn110 drivers would probably be great for a 5.1 system. The bass is truly amazing from such a small driver. In a cinema system where the speakers should to be closed, a box volume about 12 liters each ( with damping material ) would be suitable.

Here is the frequency response from one of my Genelec 8340 , on axis with the tweeter, at a distance of 1 meter from the speaker.
The measurement is done in the middle of the room , using Line audio OM 1 and Audient iD14 with audiotools . 1/6 oct smoothing . This is a very smooth frequency response . Below 400 Hz one can clearly see the room interaction .

Ok, here i have a quick measurement in my untreated listening room i did a while ago of my Mark Audio CHN110 MLTL response with a UMIK-1 and REW:

This 65 dB range is much better.
Use 1/6 octave smoothing for better representation.
For a fullrange driver, this is very good frequency response, indeed.

Right now Im trying a simple passive filter for some baffle step correction - a series coil of 2 mH and a parallell resistor to that coil at 3,3 Ohm, all in series with the + cable. Any sound gain is very dependent on the placement of the speaker - close to the wall theres no need for any correction at all. Even 60 cm away from the frontwall, soundwise Im not sure if any baffle step correction is needed. With directly coupled chn110, theres a certain ”directness” to the sound that makes me wanna listen to more music.

Edit : this compensation can also be done passive at line level between the source and amplifier. ( Linkwitz )

Response looks good, been curious to try one of these but my audiophoolery radar just kinda goes off the more I delve into them. I don't really ever hear honest opinions about beaming and the comments on dac spaciousness make me skeptical. Not much money to try them and easy to filter, might be worth finding out for myself.

I use no BSC with this alignment, i already have all the bass i want without, this is straight from amp to driver connected.

I would say if youre going for single speaker DIY, this chn110 is a bargain in my opinion. The sound is very open and natural. The beaming of high frequencies are ofcourse real, but the tradeoff is that you dont need a crossover. If you ask me, the latter is a bigger advantage than the problems of beaming, compared to a non perfect crossover in a 2-way speaker.

A single speaker is also by definition ( If no passive crossover is used ) an active driven loudspeaker which often has some advantages soundwise in the EMF area ( better bass ) .*

* Better control of back-EMF that is developed in any electromagnetic loudspeaker driver.

But it is still a small driver and therefore it does not provide a lot of dynamics when used down to about 30 Hertz...

Really not bad from 1khz on in that graph, all things considered. As expected it gets a bit out of control over 10khz, but given how low it goes, that might be the best I have seen.

Might be interesting for a nearfield desktop PC setup tuned closer to 60hz, esp if you throw some hearty DSP at it. Would it work for that tuning and a smaller volume?

The bass is truly amazing from this driver, even at rather high listening levels. Its hard to believe all this bass is coming from a 5.25 inch driver. I guess ( and the loudspeaker calculation program shows it ) that both your DIY building and my DIY speaker has a big advantage with a rather big box for that small driver, making the sound more impressive at higher spl than the average 10 liter 2-way box. Waxx - how many liters are your loudspeakerboxes ?

For desktop or homecinema, I would use a closed box with chn110 probably about 12 liters each and also use a dsp to extend the bass. The more expensive Alpair drivers has lower Qts , maybe better suited to smaller bassreflex boxes ?

There are no secrets in my building plans, just ask when you start building. :)

Many Markaudio drivers seems to sound best when listening a bit off axis so I used the same hight as the Sibelius loudspeaker made by pearl acoustics. Having the driver at this hight and sitting in a sofa automaticaly make you listen slightly below the on axis of the driver. The bass reflex tube placed 50 cm over the floor on the backside of the cabinet is for a reason.

The bass quality sounds better to my ears than having the tubes near the floor. This is a purely subjective opinion.

In a nearfield setup with subs I would make closed boxes, much easier to integrate with subs. You can always build a tower speaker like mine and have the internal volume from the upper internal cabinet only 12 liters closed.:)

I have been building a pair of single driver loudspeakers just for fun this week. I have bought a pair of Markaudio chn110 drivers, and if this sounds good Im gonna buy the more expensive alpair model.

Loudspeaker:

Size : 24 * 19,5 ( baffle) * 106,5 cm ( about as high as the sibelius loudspeaker )

Material : 1,9 cm MDF painted black. Three internal crossbraces. 3 mm sheets of Bitumen on the inside on every parallel wall ( the other undamped ) , to spread the resonanses at different frequencies avoiding any tunefork effects.

Damping material: sheep wool.

Internal volume : 31 liters

Box tuning : 36 Hz with backmounted basstube monacor br60 , 50 cm above the floor.

So how is the sound with an Aiyima a04 ( lm4562 and tpa3251 ) , compared to the Genelecs ? Stay tuned….

For the measurement people : measurements using audiotools and Line audio OM1 are coming.

They are coming, but I need a little more time, right now is vacation …. You can look at Waxx measurement as a beginning ( that is 15 degree off axis by the way;) ) .
