I will speak to my cabinet maker to see what is available.
Cherry and Mesquite are American forest products so likely not available in Australia. Suspect equivalent species with similar look do though....

Indeed, I assumed so :) .

This site shows a range of Australian woods. Not saying that they will all be available or even suitable, but it can provide a frame of reference for the appearance.

I think you will have good results from offering such a varied wood selection. I sold MB Quart and they came in many very nice exotic woods and finishes and after the customers saw them and thought about them they started coming in to buy and the stock rapidly depleted. It took about 6 weeks after we started carrying the inventory for the customers to organize their thoughts and take the plunge. We would see the people walking around and when they saw the nice woodgrains they would stop there. It's like honey to bees. The type of customer meant that they where not as concerned about price as they where about getting the right product. That's what you want. :D

There has been a certain degree of blood sweat and tears thats for sure ;)

Looks to me like you've done a superb job of integrating cutting-edge drivers and juggling the inevitable tradeoffs while remaining focused on and true to your priorities. I just hope there's some profit margin in there for you at the end of the day.

Are you the designer?

Very best wishes for your success with this speaker.

An Australian speaker cabinet-maker in Adelaide (not sure if he's your guy too) I spoke to uses jarrah, eucalyptus etc. I personally think going with Australian veneers much more interesting than the other finishes mentioned you can find elsewhere. Just a thought.

You'll note that my second list is strictly from Oz... :) -- I had the chance to live in Brisbane for a year, and I miss it terribly. Reminders of my time there are always welcome.

Just been talking with our cabinet supplier about available woods. Initially we will be concentrating on timber available locally in the Western Australian region.

This isnt an exhaustive list, but probably covers a range of tastes.

Im getting a pair made from Sheoak for a test. It has an interesting grain and darker than the picture above when finished. Below is a picture of it "wetted" to give an idea.

All are lovely. I would much rather have these local veneers than the same old walnut/rosewood/oak/cherry stuff that retail brands go with.

May I also suggestion seeing if engineered veneers are available - similar effect, but cheaper and more environmentally friendly. I used engineered Santos Rosewood on my speakers.

The colour is all the way through the veneer, so do not be worried about loosing the colour while sanding (obviously don’t sand too much or you might sand through the veneer).

The engineered veneers are constructed using natural wood veneer. The veneer is pre-dyed, ripped into very small pieces and layered by hand, using computer software to create a new tree trunk (similar to paper mache).

Eucalyptus looks lovely on the smaller harbeth speakers.

And you could send out a toy Koala with each pair-wouldn’t be in the least bit contrived or gimmicky;)

Look forward to the powered version.

My favourite wood finish for furniture and things of this sort are usually eastern american walnut cultivars. I too have noticed it is a pain getting the nice woods I am used to while in Australia. I was having a custom desk made when moving and they wanted an extra $3000-5000 to import it! Ended up just building one myself with some rubberwood and nice veneer.

We have had a number of customers contact us regarding availability and have decided to take those orders and do a "soft" launch. The Sointuva won't be on our website/shop for a few weeks yet but if anyone is interested in placing an order please contact me.

Initial pricing for a pair will be $3495 USD for painted finish (any colour you like) and $3995 for wood finish. This is significantly cheaper than the $5000 some were predicting earlier in the thread ;)

As these will be made to order there will be a 3 to 4 week lead time. As such we will only ask for 50% deposit to start the build.

Oh BTW quite happy to make odd numbers, doesn't have to be a pair, for theatre centre speakers etc.

Just to clarify, are those US or Aussie dollars and does the price include shipping to the US?
