Marantz MODEL M1 Wireless Streaming Amplifier

Hi could you find any difference pre and post the patch ?
When I first connected the unit, HEOS app made me do the update so I couldn't test before and after. I have not heard any noise when sound is not coming through the speakers. Dead silent. I love this amp and makes my Yamaha RN1000A sound kinda boring. I'm learning that after testing many amps I'm leaning towards the sound that class d provides. For some genres, I like the laid back sound from a/b amplifiers, like from my Marantz 40n (buttery smooth), but the class d amps I've had seem to keep me more engaged in the music. They are not bright by any means, just more detailed, or some would say analytical. I'll be keeping the M1 (until something new comes out lol).

It reminds me of my Wiim Amp, but it sounds more full and dynamic on my Dali floor speakers. The Wiim is awesome, especially the app options/interface, however the M1 is a step up in terms of sound quality. At lower volumes and with smaller, more efficient bookshelf speakers, I'd stick with the Wiim, but I have a large condo with high ceilings, and power hungry floor speakers and the Wiim just wouldn't cut it sometimes at higher volumes. I'm really excited about the future will bring with these all in ones.

I’m having issues with mine. I have a usb from my computer into an jds labs element 4 then rca in into the marantz m1. Basically it won’t turn on on its own if sound is introduced.

If I press the play button it introduce static. To remove the static I have to restart it through the app or hold down the play button for 5 seconds. I can connect it by optical and that would solve these issues but I like the volume knob and it may just be me it sounds better with element 4 connected. Is there something I’m not understanding here?

I also tried setting it to its less energy mode where it always stays on. If I press the play button to start it up no sounds come through unless I change it from stereo to direct or virtual. Some sort of change has to happen in the type of output.

Hi, I bought the M1 a few months ago and I experienced the same hiss, whirling sound but it disappeared after a few days. It must have had an update. But now it’s come back. I have it paired with B&W 707 S3. I have checked the firmware and it’s the latest 3.34.622. I’ve changed cables etc and nothing gets rid of it.

I read somewhere that you need to unplug everything that is plugged into the same plug as the m1. Wait a few minutes. Plug the m1 back in, then plug everything else in. Andrew Robinson the YouTuber mentioned it was a grounding issue. I’ll try to find where I read it.

That seems to have done the trick. I do love this amp and speaker combo. Sounds great! Thanks!!

They never fixed the issue. You have to set the device to quick start after rebooting it and that will keep it silent. If it goes into deep standby it will hiss again when you wake it up. The developers are incompetent. There is nothing wrong with your unit they are all like this.

As for Andrew Robinson I have no clue how or why he created this whole process. It’s unnecessary. Unplug your device and replug it in or reboot and it will stop hissing. You don’t need to unplug all plugs and ground it or whatever nonsensical instructions he posted. Unless marantz somehow developed the only device that requires this procedure to get it working.

Three months to release this update that honestly I have no idea what it fixed.

If going to power saving mode and switching it to quick start fixes your issue please call marantz support and tell them to inform the developers so they can fix it.

I have B&W 707 S3 speakers. I bought the M1 and speakers from Richer Sounds. I will get in touch with Marantz and see what they say.

Try unplugging the device. Give it ten seconds or so plug it back in. Go to the HEOS app change your power saving mode to quick start. The default option is auto standby See if that works.

Marantz tech support is a guy that looks at support documents and reads them to you. Just aren’t helpful unless you want an rma. But again high likelihood you will experience the same issue on replacement.

The issue is when the device goes into deep standby and restarts itself there is some issue with the startup process that allows it to create static.

The problem is that the unit sounds so awesome, one is reluctant to return it :-)

I wish these developers did a better job. It’s just disappointing. If they want to sell me a beta that’s fine tell me up front and discount the price.

That seems to have stopped it, thank you.
I’ll keep an ‘ear’ on it though to see if it comes back. I’m now also using airplay to connect it to my AppleTV because the HDMI arc kept switching the amp off - another issue I know but that could just be my TV.
If the pulsating hiss comes back then would we be entitled to return the amp or exchange for a different amp because of this?

That issue with it shutting off should be fixed when you changed the quick start. If the volume is below a certain threshold it shuts off. Again just low iq design.

Your amp isn’t defective just poorly designed. Mine is the same. Everyone’s is. Also yes the audio engineering is great, which is why I tolerate all this. It just bothers me it could be a really excellent product and just let down by these developers aren’t doing their job properly. It’s just disappointing.

Use the device and figure out what the issues are. There is a legitimate problem with anyone using rca inputs and standby. The device has been out for 9 months now. YouTubers coming up with nonsensical solutions for problems that shouldn’t exist. I’m so sick of these issues that seem to be common with every piece of new tech these days. I feel like a beta tester.

More or less a similar issue here. When watching TV (HDMI eARC), every 20minutes or so the amp has a sound "hickup". Like it wants to go into sleep mode, and then decides not to. Or would it somehow be related to 'dialog enhancer', which is set to "medium"?

I can’t get mine to stay connected to the HDMI at all so instead have to just revert to airplay from the Apple TV. I’ve filled in a ticket request to Marantz support because even with the power saving set to quick start I still get the annoying pulsating hiss.

You have to reboot the device then the hiss will go away. Reboot make sure it’s already set in quick start. Basically it has to turn on and stay on without the hiss. There is some issue with the way it boots up out of standby. Let us know if marantz support is helpful. They literally just tried to look for a pdf to explain the issue, which i told him was a waste of time.

I asked if you could communicate these issues with the development team as feedback…. He said no we have no communication with them. Hopefully you have better luck.

I’ve just swapped out the speakers for some Dali Spektor II’s and the pulsating hiss is still there. I will try a reboot again as you suggest but it came back when I tried earlier. I will keep you posted about Marantz support.

Yes let us know. If marantz support has any other suggestions. My suspicion is that it’s an issue when the device comes out of deep standby. When in quick start I have zero issues. I just wonder if it decreases the longevity of the device leaving it that way.

It’s completely silent with no hiss on reboot and when left on quick start. The only issue is coming out of deep standby mode. It’s definitely a firmware problem.

Also if I have the device on auto standby and something with low volume on it will go to standby on its own. I assume in below some volume threshold. When I take it out of deep standby when this happens no hiss.

The other thing I wonder is if there is a warmup process that can take 3/4/5 minutes where the hiss goes away. Haven’t tested this.
