Hi All

I'm really hoping that someone can help me out with some connectivity device as I have spent the last 2 hours trying to connect our Marantz Cinema 60 to our LG TV with no success !

I am simply trying to play our LG TV's sound through the Marantz Cinema 60 system so that we can watch TV but with the sound playing back through the Marantz Cinema 60 system.

Sounds easy but I just can't figure out how to do this.

IMG-01 shows our Marantz Cinema 60 back panel.
IMG-02 shows our LG OLED55E8PLA TV back 'Input panel'
IMG-03 shows our LG OLED55E8PLA TV side 'HDMI IN' panel

I have tried pretty much every permutation of connection using a new 8K HDMI cable to connect the TV to the Cinema 60 system in an effort to pass the TV sound through to the Cinema 60 system so that it can play the sounds through the connected surround sound speakers and, so far, nothing works !

I have re-read the cinema 60 manual but nothing seems to point to a solution.

Can anyone identify where I am going wrong and advise me on how to enable the TV sound to be played back through the Marantz cinema 60 system ?

All advice will be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Ed

As per RTING's specs it does not appear the E8 has EARC, this was introduced in 2019. However,
Update 02/27/2019: While the TV doesn't support Atmos passthrough via a Dolby TrueHD carrier signal (common in Blu-ray disks), it is advertised as supporting Atmos passthrough via Dolby Digital Plus, which is the Atmos format used by some sources like Netflix; our testing confirmed this passthrough on the LG C8. We expect this to be true for the LG E8.
Have you opened the LG's settings and set the audio output to HDMI ARC? I have a Samsung instead of an LG but I imagine every TV has such a setting.
Is the smart TV the source of the signal here? or can you put the source through the receiver first?

Connect the TV's HDMI (ARC) port to the AVR's HDMI (ARC) port, set the TV's audio output and the AVR's audio input to HDMI, and you will get sound.

What is the source of your TV video and audio? Why are you not using HDMI, the pictures show no input and output connections?

Hi StaticV3 - To begin with, many thanks for your reply. I'm still a little stuck though.

Our LG TV has a back panel that appears to have all of the input connection sockets (i.e. Aerial cable in, HDMI in, USB in, second USSB in) and, a side panel which has a PCMIA card slot, 3 x HDMI connections (one of which is labelled HDMI IN 2 (arc).

The rear of the Marantz Cinema 60 has 6 x HDMI input sockets (CBL/SAT, Media Player, Blu-ray, GAME, AUX1 and AUX2) and 2 x HDMI OUT sockets (Monitor 1 ARC eARC and Monitor 2).

Are you saying that the HDMI connection needs to be between the TV's HDMI IN on the back panel and the Cinema 60's Monitor 1 ARC eARC HDMI socket ?

Thanks for any follow-on help you can give.

All the best

Ed

As staticV3 said, but just note that the HDMI input on the TV that can pass ARC is "HDMI 2", so make sure you connect "HDMI 2" on the TV to the "Monitor 1" HDMI output on the AVR.

Hi Guys (kyuu, peng, staicV3 and masterhw)

Thank you all so much for your replies. My wife has just 'reclaimed' the TV for the evening so I will give your suggestions a try first thing in the morning (30/01/2024) and get back to you all. Fingers crossed. And again, thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. I had just about run out of things to try and your posts have given me new hope. I'll re-post in the morning and let you know how I get on. All the best to you all. Ed

The TV and your AVR both have a single ARC port.

Connect the two ARC ports to each other, and you can listen to your TV sound through your AVR.

HDMI-CEC must be ON in both the TV and Cinema 60 for ARC to work. Turn Simplink(HDMI-CEC) ON in the TV and turn HDMI Control(HDMI-CEC) ON in the Cinema 60. Set the TV’s digital audio output setting to Bitstream/Passthrough.

Hi Guys,

To begin with, many many thanks. It's working and that's all down to you guys sparing the time to help me get the TV and the AV centre set up.

The turning point was with Tre2023 advice re the settings. I went back through yesterdays notes and followed all of your suggestions. At the end, the system still wouldn't worked and, out of frustration, I turned the TV off and the Marantz Cinema 60 also turned off. I was a little surprised at that so I waited a minute and then turned the TV back on. The Marantz unit started as well automatically but still no sound and then, after about 30 seconds, I got the sound through the first 2 speakers (either side of the TV). Turning the TV off and on again must have sent a message along the HDMI to the Marantz unit and it started.

I cannot thank you guys enough. The Marantz manual and the LG manual just don't make it clear to the untrained eye, exactly what needs to be done to get the systems working and I, in my stupidity, had thought that the HDMI connection would work in a similar way to 'plug & play USB' connections.

All I have to do now is to figure out how to change the sound from the front 2 speakers to surround sound and then I'm going to document the settings on the LG TV and the Marantz system in case we ever have to reset the TV and / or the Marantz system.

Thanks so much for all of your help guys.

All the best

Ed

It can take a few seconds for the Cinema 60 to receive the power up commands from the TV and switch to the selected input source.

Again, check the digital audio output setting in the TV‘s Advanced Sound Settings and make sure it is set to Bitstream/Passthrough, not PCM.

When a two channel PCM signal is output from the TV over ARC, the Cinema 60 will switch to Stereo mode by default. You can change it manually to Dolby Surround or DTS Neural:X.

The TV should output DD signals when set to Bitstream/Passthrough for output. Even if they are two channel DD signals, the Cinema 60 should default to Dolby Surround mode. DTS Neural:X will still be applicable to all Dolby signals except for Dolby Atmos.

Hi Tre2023

That's brilliant, I'll follow your recommendations in the morning (my wife has commandeered the TV again !).

I have had a look through the manual this evening. I put it to one side when I started to install the system a few days ago and remember thinking that the manual was heavy and must cover a lot of detail. How wrong I was ! I started to read it at 8.00 pm this evening and finished the English session by 8.05 ! And I have to say was none the wiser in terms of getting to the menus and looking at the various options.

I have installed the apps but need to set up username and passwords and am hoping that they will throw more light on the detailed operation of the system.

Again, thanks so much for all of your help, it has been invaluable.

All the best

Ed

Hi there

I really hope that you don't mind and I'm sorry to bother you again, but I'm still having no luck with the HDMI connection between the LG OLED55 TV and the Marantz Cinema 60 system.

I have tried juggling the sound settings on the TV and the good news is that the sound is getting through to the Cinema 60 system. The bad news is that as soon as I select HDMI 2 (the HDMI connection) the LG TV gives me a 'No Signal' message (please check the power of the device and cable connection status... for external audio devices, please go to Settings > Sound > Sound Out and change the settings to HDMI ARC).

I have re-checked all the TV connection and the HDMI connection is connected correctly to the ARC socket. The sound signal is getting through as I am getting a stereo sound from the front 2 speakers however, I'm not able to see the Marantz menu on the TV.

I have tried a 10K and an 8K HDMI cable and that doesn't seem to change things. I tried an old basic HDMI cable and, for a split second, I saw a Marantz logo on the TV on HDMI 2 and then it changed back to the 'no signal' message.

It's getting late and I thought I would get in touch to see if there is anything else that you can think of.

At this stage I am starting to think that our LG OLED55 TV (now almost 6 years old) simply isn't capable of making the HDMI connection fully. I can't change any settings on the Marantz side of things as I can't see the Marantz menu on Line HDMI 2 !

If you can think of anything else that I can try then do let me know. If not, I think my best plan will be to contact LG and then Marantz on Monday and see if they can cast any light on the problem.

Thanks again for all your help and don't worry if you can't think of anything else that I can try.

All the best

Ed

Problem Solved ! The HDMI connection seems fine and I had thought that I would be able to control the Marantz Menu on HDMI 2 (i.e. I would be able to see the menu just as I had done when I went in to the initial Marantz setup routine. For whatever reason, this doesn't work on our TV however, I installed the Marantz AVR Remote app waited for a minute for it to install and load and then looked at TV Audio. I managed to change the audio from the front 2 speakers to 'Dolby Surround' and then all of the speakers, including the sub-base woofer, sprang in to life. I'm going to need to read up on the app but, after yet another day toiling away, at least I have all speakers working. Many thanks for all of your help. Have a great weekend. Ed

It can be frustrating using HDMI-CEC. Using the Magic remote, press the input button and tiles should appear on the TV screen of selectable input source devices including the Cinema 60. Devices connected to the Cinema 60 and supporting HDMI-CEC with it enabled will appear in their own tile. Selecting one of these device tiles will switch the LG TV to HDMI 2 and the Cinema 60 will switch to the selected device.

The Cinema 60 onscreen menu cannot be seen when HDMI 2 is not selected as the input source. When using the TV tuner or Smart apps, switch to HDMI 2 by pressing the input button, which looks like a little cord and plug, and select the Cinema 60 or device connected to it to switch the TV to HDMI 2. When using the TV tuner or Smart apps, the TV will force the Cinema 60 to switch to the TV input source and audio will be sent from the TV to the Cinema 60 over ARC. A video signal from the Cinema 60's onscreen menu will not be seen on the TV when using ARC and the TV must be switched to HDMI 2 from the tuner or Smart apps. Anyway, this is how it is all supposed to work.

There can be issues when HDMI ports are not set correctly. Make sure the HDMI 2 port is set to 4K in the TV Device settings for proper HDCP and HDR support. The Cinema 60 HDMI ports should already be set to 4K Enhanced by default but double check them.

Hi there

Many thanks for the additional advice. I am so pleased that the system is finally up and running and the sound (now that I have finally got the surround sound running with your help) sounds brilliant.

I'm really grateful for all of your advice and support. I definitely would not have been able to configure the TV and Marantz system to work on my own and I'm just so grateful that you spared the time to help a beginner to get his system up-and-running.

All the best

Ed
