Marantz AV20 13.4 Channel AVP Discussion

Greetings everyone x2,

I just ordered my AV20 unit. Thank you all for the great information and amazing arguments provided in this thread.

Before ASR I was also tempted by and went through some not so great gear; such an amazing job Amir does to help us decide what is really good quality gear vs marketing fluff.

The Emo RMC-1 / RMC-1+ processors were my target initially, even after the not so good ASR review, I was hoping they would eventually get their act together. However reading their user experience and anxiety of them put me off that purchase. By the end it was a choice between Anthem AVM 70/ AVM90 and Marantz AV10 / AV20.

Not only I find the Marantz more appealing all things considered. Price was the final deciding factor! Anthem is selling gear much more expensive than Marantz in my area, which meant there is less than $1,000 USD difference between an AVM70 to an AV20.
Small world! Welcome to the family!

Looking forward to hearing your impressions after you get it dialed in. Just received mine today, despite the winter storm here. Will share configuration tips if I have anything unique to offer.

Saul Marantz himself was quite alive by then. You should have got his signature and that piece of gear would be a collector´s item.
Oh my, could you imagine what a 2270 signed by Saul himself would be worth today, even if they were built by Superscope/Sony ?
Cosmetically decent ones that will just "turn on" are pulling around a $1,000 on ebay.
Refurb'd ones are pulling $2,000 to 3,000k.
Here's a pic of me around 1975 eating a Whopper in front of my 2270, and 2440 quad add-on amp.
Classic AR-XB table, etc.
Dang exwife took it all in the divorce.

Congrats av20 sounds amazing. Anthem and marantz is the best gear for normal people.

Does anyone know what the DAC-to-channel mapping is for the AV10 or AV20? We know the AV20 has nine two-channel DACs and that they are not symmetric to minimize crosstalk. For example, a Sound United video states that one DAC serves a front speaker and a back/height. I have a 7.2.4 system and would like to spread out these 13 channels in a manner across all 18 DAC "channels" so that LCR and both subs do not share a DAC.

Thoughts?

They both perform very well and achieve high standards for SINAD in the class. And there are 4 subs, not 2. You can't really spread the channels in the way you would want. Each of them has their own designation and mapping. But also not sure what the purpose really is.

Many of the channels are assignable, so I wanted to spread out my speakers as much as possible to "air gap" my LCR and subs from sharing a DAC with any other channels. Not sure if this would make any audible difference, but it wouldn't do any harm either.

Sure. Go ahead and do whatever you want - once you buy the unit it's yours forever and ever to do with it as you please. Not familiar with "air gap" term though. It is prevailing theory though that our LCRs are safe the way they are. We do raise many other concerns as to how to get best out of Marantz AVPs, but this is the first one of the kind.

Do the AV20 (or if you have the AV10) run hot?
AV10 runs about 30 C. One of the reasons I chose it over AVRs. Just a really cool experience. Will last for a very long time as keep it operating between in environment that is 23-24C at all times.

Thank you Oddball!

Agreed. Av20 gets a little warm, but nothing like the old sr6012 did.

I think the main source of heat here is the digital board. I have an ac infinity t8 on mine just to be ‘safe’ and to control the aux fans on my nc400 amps. The processor runs cool enough that my aux fans barely switch on.:rolleyes::D

I don't have a way to measure my AV20 but I found the right rear area gets quite warm.
I put the same fan on it I had on my Denon, they can never run too cool. IMO

My Aux Fans are from AC Infinity and vent to the "side" rather than straight through like a standard PC-type fan. Still inexpensive comparatively. :)

Beyond my usage, I would agree completely that a good fan like what you have is all one needs to keep one of these AVPs cool! My usage is on a shelf with another above, so rear venting is the order for me! :D

All, need help please! I finally hooked up my AV20, but I'm having severe HDMI handshake issues with my Nvidia shield Pro (most recent version). It only provides a stable connection in standard mode. If I use enhanced, it sometimes works but I have to connect and disconnect the Nvidia 's power. I seem to be the only one having this issue. Please help!

I hate to say it, but first thing I would do is get a new hdmi cable.

I can't really offer any help at this point. I use a Apple 4k TV box here plugged directly into my AV20 without issues.
That Std-Enhanced setting is in your Shield right? What does Enhanced offer you.
Like @ryanosaur I would suggest you start with a new quality 4k or 8k rated cable as short as possible. I've had excellent luck with Monoprice HDMI's

Yes I have quality certified 8K HDMI cables, 3 ft, that worked perfectly fine with my previous processors (Emotiva, known for notorious HDMI handshake issues). I have tried 3 different HDMI cables, to no avail..

By "standard" and "enhanced" I mean in the Marantz setting in Video --> 4K/8K Signal Format.

Impossible for me to know what’s up. Of the 3 cables you tried, were any brand spanking new certified?

When I switched out my AVR to the AV 20, I replaced everything with new RuiPro cables and had zero issues.

Back in the day I had problems with an old PlayStation and that was the fix; ever since then I replaced everything my HDMi cables when I change gear.

Ah, I hadn't even looked there for mine. Manual says there's 3 settings available (Std, Enhanced, 8k Enhanced) with the Enhanced being the Default setting.
Just checked and mine are all at Enhanced.l
All this said if it's not the cable and you tried a different input, that points to it being something about your Shield.
In any case is it worth a worry over, do you believe the Shield is capable of delivering 4/8k video at rates high enough the setting will make a difference?

Enhanced
