Marantz AV20 13.4 Channel AVP Discussion

I have not seen one nichicon cap. The smaller next to the large are also jianghai. Found some elna caps.

For me its a crap. This thing has a warranty so I can't change out the caps and by the time the warranty is over this thing wont matter. I probably wont have it in 3 years.

Counterpoint, these appear to be a new model and may be built to different standards or specs than are being assumed. I couldn't find any record of these specific models. They have a long history of making capacitors, possibly Marantz requested they make a higher spec part for them and this is the first application.

I'll reiterate a comment made by others earlier, everything that is "from china" is not garbage like it's 1970, they have ability to make high quality components when specified.

I got my first Marantz about 1975, a 2270 receiver and they never let me down yet.

Absolutely loving the sound coming out of this thing (EVO AcoustiX for now, DIRAC ART over the holidays) - but the HDMI issues remind me of my early days with my X6700H. I can't believe this, when this was supposed to be a "full 8k everywhere!" upgrade. Same cables everywhere that were all working just great with the X6700H _yesterday_, so while I will start replacing them one by one, they are absolutely capable of what I am asking of them ... this reeks of firmware bug. 4k/60 works fine from Shield with the HDMI port on the Marantz end set to Enhanced or 8K Enhanced (well, sometimes), but then as soon as I enable DV you can see from the display it's dropping the connection over and over and over and over ... looks like a handshake thing to me. Why can't things just work? Especially at this price point.

Hoping someone else has had and resolved similar issues. Not finding a whole lot searching various AV sites or the internet as a whole.
You can run 4k/60 on 18gbps cable spec. I believe 8k/60 needs 40gbps.

You can do 4k/60hz with at 10 bit but only with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling.

8k/60Hz is only possible with Display Stream Compression even on 40Gbps cables. However there is essentially no 8k content. On the display side Sony have pulled out of 8k TVs entirely although Samsung and LG still have products.

I was just trying to get what was working before over the same cables, working again. When I read "8k enhanced" I think "8k60/4k120", which I guess the Shield doesn't even support anyway, but with the number of things that _do_ support 4k120 these days, I try to just set everything up for it so I'm not pulling my hair out later trying to troubleshoot an issue.

I got it working with a Dr. HDMI 8K in the middle as a sink with the built in EDID "11", "8K60-420 FRL-5 VRR HDR 7.1" and everything is working as expected again, including Dolby Vision

Greetings everyone,

Thanks to the high-quality discussion in this forum, I just ordered the AV 20 after finding an open-box buy @ $5150. It will replace my (please don't laugh) Emo XMC-2+, which replaced my Emo RMC-1L, which replaced my Denon AVR 3808-CI.

Will probably take one month to get Dirac ART fully dialed in, and I look forward to sharing my impressions at that time.

Thanks to all of you for the analysis in this forum. After a decade of being in the Emo forum, it's so refreshing to be here. Lots of good folks there as well, but mostly anxiety from Emo issues.

I'm envisioning something similar to Stockholm Syndrome in those Emo forums.

Very close!

Emo's unique topology of fully differential from in-to-out distinguishes their processors from every other one (except Trinnov) and is why I stayed with Emo for a decade. But as confirmed by ASR, they still haven't optimized implementation. I don't have time anymore to wait. I want to enjoy life and my theater. Hoping that returning to the Denon-Matantz family gets me there.

Sorry but what is the problem? You want to alter the product - because of what?

BTW, that warranty is 5 years, so you'll have to listen to those crap caps a little longer. :(

I may not like the brand of caps used. But this model av20 sounds amazing. Waiting for another sub amp to show up before calibration.

There are other models like new Tide and HTP-1 - you might want to check their caps - if that is all that really matters.

All the parts matter. U would think a $6k model would use like nichicon and Panasonic caps.

I would not. They use what they see fit to use - take it or leave it. Or just redo the whole thing to your liking. Once you buy it - it's literally yours to do what you feel fit. But you better understand what you are doing and for what.

Easy to say but without being in the chain of peanut crunchers you really don't know.
If you were paying $20,000 + for a Storm or Trinnov I can see room to complain, maybe.
OTOH I've been using at or near TOTL Marantz front ends since around 1974 and the only one that failed took a pretty solid lightning strike.
It does come with one of the best warranty in the business (5 years) so I wouldn't worry over a few cap choices.
So far mine is operating flawlessly and sounds amazing.
If it really is bothering you that bad, talk to your dealer about a return or exchange for something else. I do understand that you should be satisfied with your expensive purchase. If something about it bothers you, whether justified or not, that's not a good thing. I'm highly confident if I talked to my dealer he'd do whatever I asked for within reason to make me happy. Take a deep breath and then decide what you want to do.
Good luck. Sal

Im going to keep it. I enjoy the sound. Its just how I feel. Your right maybe they didnt have more room for higher brands. But I know the integra drx 8.4 uses higher model parts also anthem uses bigger names. Im also the only one opening these boxes and making pictures of these new models and posting the pictures not worrying about warranty.

If you have the hardware, you can definetly try 8K. Use a PC, run PC content like videogames at that resolution and there it is. The caveat is that even a top of the line GPU will struggle with such resolution.

I know it´s a niche case, a gimick if you may, but for the pourpose of testing, it´s possible.

Saul Marantz himself was quite alive by then. You should have got his signature and that piece of gear would be a collector´s item. ;)

Greetings everyone x2,

I just ordered my AV20 unit. Thank you all for the great information and amazing arguments provided in this thread.

Before ASR I was also tempted by and went through some not so great gear; such an amazing job Amir does to help us decide what is really good quality gear vs marketing fluff.

The Emo RMC-1 / RMC-1+ processors were my target initially, even after the not so good ASR review, I was hoping they would eventually get their act together. However reading their user experience and anxiety of them put me off that purchase. By the end it was a choice between Anthem AVM 70/ AVM90 and Marantz AV10 / AV20.

Not only I find the Marantz more appealing all things considered. Price was the final deciding factor! Anthem is selling gear much more expensive than Marantz in my area, which meant there is less than $1,000 USD difference between an AVM70 to an AV20.
