I’ve had a few issues with EQ in the Apple Music app, where I’ve been using an external headphone dac/amp with a Mac or iPhone. I usually max out the volume on the Apple device, and then use the volume control on the dac/amp to get it on the range I want.

Recently I’ve noticed EQ applied in the Music app hasn’t been changing the music I’ve been playing. I’ve switched from opposites, like Bass Booster and Treble Booster, with no change. I then noticed EQ was working the other day, and wondered why - I hadn’t maxed out the volume on the Apple device. Doing some quick testing, it appears Apple reduces the effect EQ has, as you turn the volume up. Has anyone else experienced this?

So now I’m mostly running the Apple device at half to 3/4 volume and using the dac/amp to boost that.
Or do people just max out the dac/amp, and use the volume controls on the device to get the correct level, anyway?

If you max out the volume, you take away the headroom required for EQ. That is why.
